Iyengar Yoga Detroit Collective promotes self-awareness, in order to build a more just, discerning, and compassionate society. We embrace Iyengar Yoga as a tool for healing and collective liberation, by providing high quality, affordable classes that welcome all bodies. We practice cooperative economics to align our values with the ethics of yoga.

IYDC is unique in the yoga world:

Currently ALL our online classes are “Community Gift,” sliding-scale, donation-based classes, so that anyone can attend regardless of financial capacity.

Our classes are among the least expensive Iyengar Yoga classes offered anywhere.

4/5 of our teachers are persons of color, in an industry where POC are vastly under-represented.

We are located in a working class, multi-racial neighborhood, in a city that is over 80% Black.

We operate as a cooperative, redirect all our profit back into the community, and make decisions collectively and by consensus.

Many eyes are on us, locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally, as a model for how Iyengar Yoga, and yoga in general, can be made far more accessible. We are a departure from the capitalist, for-profit, sole proprietorship model that dominates the yoga world.

We need your support to stay vital and healthy.

In order to provide yoga equitably, we rely on those who can give to donate to our cause. Help us bring health and healing to our community by making a monthly or annual gift. It is an unfortunate fact that many who could benefit from yoga all too often cannot afford it. This could include those with back pain, neck pain, or knee pain; those experiencing trauma and stress, often for generations; those with young children or others they care for; and those who are unemployed, underemployed, and/or underpaid.

We seek funds for a paid, 2-year Yoga Apprentice Program, to support and train up to 5 apprentices each year to begin the comprehensive training required to become a CIYT (Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher). We are actively building a teaching community which reflects our neighborhood and our city. We especially seek Black and Indigenous People of Color, those who identify as LGBTQIA, and low income individuals who would not otherwise be able to afford the training.

IYDC Solidarity Fund also includes our Community Gift Program, which currently offers 14 donation-based, sliding-scale online classes each week.
