PATREON PAGE LAUNCHED 9TH NOVEMBER 2017

I never embarked in any one thing to which I have so entirely devoted myself, and to which I have devoted so much time, thought, and labour, and on the success of which I have staked so much reputation, and to which I have so largely committed myself and those who were disposed to place faith in me.” — Isambard Kingdom Brunel

 WELCOME

Welcome! I'm Jack Lowe, a photographer, printmaker, sound recordist and creator of The Lifeboat Station Project, one of the largest photographic projects ever undertaken...and I couldn't have summed up my approach more succinctly than Mr. Brunel.

The project is only possible with the help of my Patrons: read on to learn how you can join the journey and be rewarded for your support (remember to check out the two pledging tips at the bottom)...

 THE MISSION

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is the incredible charity of dedicated volunteers who save lives at sea in the UK and Ireland. Amazingly, the organisation has been entirely funded by voluntary contributions for nearly 200 years.

The earliest seeds of this project were sown in my childhood, when my love for lifeboats began. Much later in life, after a career in photography, I found myself searching for a change in direction — something that would take me away from sitting in front of computers all day!

I considered what I felt most passionate about and wrote these words on a piece of paper:

That scrap of paper — along with a lot of thinking, dreaming and planning — led me to the idea of travelling to all 238 RNLI lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland to photograph them, in order to preserve a vital aspect of our island nation’s culture for generations to come.

And there's a twist! I work as the Victorians used to, making the photographs on glass from my mobile darkroom — a decommissioned ambulance called Neena.

WHAT YOUR SUPPORT MEANS TO ME

After nearly four years, 119 lifeboat stations and reaching the halfway point in September 2018, I know I've come a long way already. I've found my rhythm for making the work and for telling the story. But it's been hard joining the financial dots. Sometimes it's been terrifying.

Many creative artists, not just today but throughout history, will tell you that they spend a very large part of their daily lives worrying about money. My experience has been no different.

There's been so much financial firefighting behind the scenes and that's been incredibly frustrating — not least as it's time that could have been much better spent planning future missions and making new work.

All the while, I've been constantly looking for new ways through the adversity to strengthen the financial foundations of the Project...and then, in November 2017, a friend introduced me to Patreon.

What a discovery! A real turning point and landmark on the journey. It seems to be the perfect environment for helping creative people like me. And that's where you come in...

I'm proud and grateful to receive a small licence fee from the RNLI in return for the charity using my images to promote their work. However, the contribution covers less than half of my production costs, so there's still a steep hill to climb when making this unprecedented body of photographs and sound recordings.

Now in my fourth year on the coast, the increasing number of followers who become my Patrons is helping me to complete the remainder of this incredible RNLI archive.

So, perhaps you can understand my dream for making The Lifeboat Station Project? To make the rest of this historical archive without some of the considerable financial stresses I've had to cope with in the first half.

And that's why I'm so pleased to have discovered Patreon and you, my new Patrons.

 PATRON REWARDS: WHAT'S ON OFFER?

A QUICK NOTE ON DOLLARS AND VAT

DOLLARS: Patreon is a US company, so the currency is shown in US Dollars. At the time of writing, here's an approximate exchange rate for my UK Patrons >>  $1 = £0.75

You'll see I've added an approximate Sterling conversion at the bottom of each reward. In our global village, I hope you're happy to support me even if USDs aren't your native currency.

VAT: Due to European Union regulations, Patreon need to charge VAT on pledges made by EU-based Patrons. Therefore, if you live in the EU, please bear in mind that the Reward values will have VAT added. Click here for some more info about it from Patreon.

 MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT

In September 2018, I reached a huge landmark — I'm now 50% of the way through the Project and on schedule to complete it in 2022.

Travelling in my mobile darkroom, I use an ancient process called Wet Plate Collodion to make photographs on glass just as the Victorians used to between the 1850s and 1880s.

It's both beautiful and engaging, enabling everyone involved to feel that they're part of something unique, historical and special.

Indeed, some of the photographs have already been acquired for a national archive and appeared countless times in museums and galleries as well as the national and global press.

I'm also making sound recordings — including interviews and ambient sounds — which I use to make soundscapes to accompany the photographs. In spare moments (!) I've recently started publishing a podcast using those sound recordings too. It's called Postcards from the Coast.

The photographs — which can all be viewed in the online Galleries — will ultimately be showcased along with the sound recordings in a stunning exhibition and book, both of which are set to be huge fundraisers for the RNLI.

Goals
143 of 300 patrons

When this goal clicks into place, we're entering into territory that's been sitting way out of sight beyond the horizon for a long, long time.

After several precarious years whilst committing everything to my life's work, I'll also be able to plan my coastal missions with confidence, enabling me to make The Lifeboat Station Project without the considerable financial pressures I experienced in the first half of journey.

Can your pledges really make this happen? Judging by how you've all rallied to support me in the first year, I'm starting to believe it's within reach...
