About Jack Lowe

 WELCOME

Welcome! I'm Jack Lowe, a photographer, printmaker, sound recordist and creator of The Lifeboat Station Project, an 8 year art project funded by my supporters and prints sales.

Patreon is a place that allows my followers — real people like you — to support this life-affirming, historic art project.

It's a way for anybody to help with the nuts and bolts, to put fuel in the tank and silver onto glass. In a tempestuous world, we're making our very own good news story together, shining a light on the incredible lifeboat volunteers around our coastline.

If you've enjoyed following the journey so far and would like to contribute to its future, I hope you'll consider becoming a patron. If you're new to the notion of patronage, I wrote  this blog post to help my followers better understand what goes into making such a huge project.

As you can see from my goals on the left hand side (or below on a mobile device), I'm currently aiming for 238 patrons to pledge their support — equivalent to the number of lifeboat stations on my journey.

Read on to learn more about becoming a patron and helping to fund the creation of The Lifeboat Station Project...

 STOP PRESS!

A brand new limited edition ‘With Courage’ keyring is now in production ready for Christmas 2019. The design will be showcased here for the first time, where patrons will have an early opportunity to pre-order before the public release.

Just like the limited edition keyring in 2017, each one will be numbered from 001 to 238 (equivalent to the number of operational RNLI lifeboat stations).

Remember, the last design sold out in under 2 hours when I released it publicly, so make sure you’re here in good time for the latest incarnation!

 THE MISSION

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is the incredible charity of dedicated volunteers who save lives at sea in the UK and Ireland. Amazingly, the organisation has been entirely funded by voluntary contributions for nearly 200 years.

The earliest seeds of this project were sown in my childhood, when my love for lifeboats began. Much later in life, after a career in photography, I found myself searching for a change in direction — something that would take me away from sitting in front of computers all day.

I considered what I felt most passionate about and wrote these words on a piece of paper:

That scrap of paper — along with a lot of thinking, dreaming and planning — led me to the idea of travelling to all 238 RNLI lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland to photograph them, in order to preserve a vital aspect of our island nation’s culture for generations to come.

And there's a twist! I work as the Victorians used to, making the photographs on glass from my mobile darkroom — a decommissioned ambulance called Neena.

WHAT YOUR SUPPORT MEANS TO ME

After nearly five years and 148 lifeboat stations, I know I've come a long way already. I've found my rhythm for making the work and for telling the story. But it's been hard joining the financial dots. Sometimes it's been terrifying.

Many creative artists, not just today but throughout history, will tell you that they spend a very large part of their daily lives worrying about money. My experience has been no different.

There's been so much financial firefighting behind the scenes and that's been incredibly frustrating — not least as it's time that could have been much better spent planning future missions and making new art.

All the while, I've been constantly looking for new ways to strengthen the financial foundations of the project. Then a friend introduced me to Patreon in November 2017.

What a discovery! This became a real turning point and landmark on the timeline of the project. It's to be the perfect environment to help creative people like me. And that's where you come in.

Now in my fifth year on the coast, the growing number of followers who have become my patrons is helping me to complete the remainder of this incredible historic archive.

So, perhaps you can understand my dream for making The Lifeboat Station Project? To make the rest of this RNLI archive without some of the considerable financial stresses I've had to cope with in the first half.

And that's why I'm so pleased to have discovered Patreon and you, my new patrons.

A QUICK NOTE ON DOLLARS AND VAT

DOLLARS: Patreon is a US company, so the currency is shown in US Dollars. At the time of writing, here's an approximate exchange rate for my UK patrons >>  $1 = £0.82

You'll see I've added an approximate Sterling conversion at the bottom of each pledge level. In our global village, I hope you're happy to support me even if US Dollars aren't your native currency.

VAT: Due to European Union regulations, Patreon need to charge VAT on pledges made by EU-based patrons. Therefore, if you live in the EU, please bear in mind that the Reward values will have VAT added. Click here for some more info about it from Patreon.

 THANK YOU

Goals
190 of 238 patrons
