First things first: You're probably here because you want to read my writing. Good news! You can do that free of charge (for one story, at least). Go to the Posts tab and you can read a sample story, Kennedy, in all its unadulterated glory!

Welcome to my Patreon!

My name is Jake Sparkman and I'm a big man with a little dream: A simple life removed from the hustle and bustle of civilization so I can spend my days writing, yelling at people on the internet, and tending the garden with my beautiful wife. The garden will be full of fresh vegetables, herbs, and (in the interest of full disclosure) probably a shit ton of weed.

Anywho, the big question you want answered is, "Why should I give you, a no-name rando on the internet, my hard-earned money?" I'll tell you why, fellow no-name rando on the internet: Because I will entertain you. My medium is the written word but my passion is entertainment. Most times that comes in the form of science fiction, fantasy, fun facts, dry sarcasm, and combinations thereof.

I’m currently working on an untitled detective noir novel that deals with a lot of big issues: bigotry; class warfare; systemic poverty; the reality of being a pariah trying to change a social framework from within; human trafficking; and the cognitive dissonance we experience dealing with someone looking for the same end as ourselves but achieving it through very different means. It also has chase scenes, explosions, drug use, a distinctive magical system with extensive social repercussions, and a unique take on blood magic (spooky!). If you fund me, that's the project you will be contributing your money toward at the moment.

This Patreon has no end date. After this novel is complete, I'll move on to another project and provide updates reflecting as much. I intend to use this account (in conjunction with its Twitter and Facebook pages) as a means to both communicate with readers and provide insight into both my creative process and the practical aspects of shaping my novel(s).

One of the most frustrating things for me when learning how to write was figuring out how to turn the massive conglomeration of disconnected scenes, sentences, and scintillating vignettes floating around my head into linear, lovely, page-turning fiction; one that keeps the reader engaged while distilling the emotions and ideas I’m trying to explore into the sweet nectar of artistic entertainment. It’s one thing to have educators or articles explain the theory of crafting a book in abstract, but it’s another entirely to be able to see someone’s work every step of the way. As a leisure time academic, I find that type of knowledge invaluable and I don’t intend to keep it secret.

In the words of O'Shea Jackson, Jr., playing his father on the silver screen, "Our art is a reflection of our reality." As the world grows ever smaller, that reality is encompassing more than just ourselves, our homes, our families and friends. It’s starting to include everyone, regardless of nationality or wealth. We no longer live in the era of the individual, we live in the era of Humanity. We've had a pretty rough go of it recently, but I'm confident that I can be a helpful and educational voice through these tumultuous times.

Thank you in advance for your time, your pledge, and your willingness to support writers of all kinds!

Your choice to support the arts (in any capacity) is not going unnoticed. You will be included as a financial contributor in the acknowledgements section of every book I release while you are subscribed. You will also get access to any and all pictures of our two adorable kitties that I post. Their names are Minerva (the dark-colored, sassy, swinging-gut longhair) and Peeves (the playful, vocal, colored-like-a-toasted-marshmallow shorthair with a cuddle addiction).

The name used in the Acknowledgements section will be whichever name you have set on your Patreon account, so make sure that's accurate!
