About James Garside

For as little as $1 per month you can adopt a writer. You get regular updates on your adopted writer, exclusive benefits and rewards, and behind the scenes access to a writer in their natural habitat. Your support makes a real difference. Adopt me today.

I'm James, an independent journalist and writer — this sounds sexy but it's really just a polite way of saying that I'm brokeass poor and determined to keep writing no matter what life throws at me.

I've written all kinds of stuff from journalism, copywriting and communications work for charities, to blogging, fiction, film scripts and the occasional unhinged rant.

Many years ago one of my creative writing students told me that she was a drug dealer in the business of selling lexical hallucinogens — better known as books and stories. Patreon is where I share with you my personal stash.

Thank you for joining me on Patreon.

What to Expect

A friend asked me what Patreon was. I told them it was a way to adopt me as a writer. They said: ”I've already adopted a small child in Bangladesh. They write me letters. What do I get if I adopt you?” This is why I love my friends!

It's a fair question. The idea is you get updates on my writing and travels, exclusive benefits and rewards, and behind the scenes access to a writer in their natural habitat. You also get to settle any argument with me by saying: "But I own you!"

As for the goodies that you get? That's up to you.

I'll give shout outs on social media to everyone who joins me on Patreon and send you regular updates about my work.

My three favourite things to do are to write, travel and take photos. Also to make art. I never said that I could count. So expect to see updates about all of the above including:

  • Blogging
  • Journalism
  • Fiction
  • Books
  • Music
  • Films
  • Reviews
  • Travel
  • Photography
  • Art

You can also expect benefits like discounts, free stuff, and early access to my writing, photos, and creative projects.

All levels of membership are voluntary but the higher tier that you join the bigger the rewards and special one-off bonuses that will be unlocked over time.

Maybe you want me to send you a handwritten postcard from a particular place, give you some travel photos, review your book, or write something for you about your favourite subject?

Anything specific that you want? Just ask.

You're also part of a wider community of writers, artists, and creative people. You can contact me on Patreon at any time or chat with me on Twitter where I've over 15,000 followers.

I've already met some of you on my travels and hope to do more of the same. I hereby solemnly swear that if I ever meet you in person I will at the very least buy or make you a cup of tea.
