Hi, I’m James Scott Bell, winner of the International Thriller Writers Award, and the author of bestselling full-length thrillers, as well as books on the craft of writing.

In college I fell in love with the pulp fiction and paperback originals of a bygone era. What I liked about this writing was that it was pure, page-turning entertainment. It had to be. Because that was the only way these writers could make any dough. The writers of that time had lived through the Depression. To put food on the table they had to produce lots of stories—often for a penny-a-word—and the stories had to be good.

Americans back then were voracious readers, and they snapped up those pulp magazines by the truckload. They read the stories on subway cars and in restaurants; in the morning before going to work and at night before falling asleep; on the sly in the office and on sunny park benches on weekends.

Those stories filled a need. And they could be read and finished in a short period of time.

We have that same need today. Especially today, in this fast-paced world. Need some entertainment while waiting in the doctor’s office? Or on the subway? Or in that long line at the market?

Or, after a hard day, you finally have some quiet time to relax, and you want to read something that isn’t War and Peace.

Then I’m your man. Consider me your own, personal pulp magazine. I have all sorts of short stories up my sleeve—full of suspense, mystery, and even some laughs. I have a series character in the wings: Bill Armbrewster, Hollywood Troubleshooter. These stories will take place in the Hollywood of the 1940s, where Armbrewster works for National-Consolidated Pictures. He gets stars out of the fixes they’re in and thwarts things like extortion and blackmail. Good, old-school pulp. My contemporary stories will usually have a twist ending. Others will be all heart.

And all of them will be an escape into the fictive dream.

These stories won't appear anywhere else. They’ll be exclusive to you. (Maybe years down the road I'll think about collecting a few of them in an ebook. If I ever do, you'll get it for free.)

Now, there are two ways for creative folks to go about Patreon. One way is to solicit monthly pledges. But that way doesn’t seem right for me. A writer writes, then puts the story out there for people to purchase.

Which is why I am choosing the “per creation” set up. This means there is no monthly charge to you. A charge is made only when a story is actually delivered. It’s win-win. I will be able to write more fiction, and you will receive it immediately. Plus, I won’t post more than one story in any given month, nor will I publish any story (as Orson Welles used to say in those old wine commercials) “before its time.”

When a story is published, you’ll get an email with a link that takes you to it. You can read it online, or via the Patreon app for your tablet or phone (just go to the App Store (Apple) or Google Play (Android) to download the free app).

And it’s risk-free. There’s no long term contract, like with cable or your phone. You can opt out any time. But I’m betting you’ll want to stick around, because you love to read and I love to write.
