About Jana Pochop

Singer/songwriter thought-writer filmmaker wanderer New Mexican nerd with a penchant for pop songs, coffee, political news addiction, and sorting it all out...or trying to sort it all out, anyway.

Whaaaat?
Since the business of music is a wild one, it's nice that the folks at Patreon provide a platform for artists like me to release songs, videos, essays, and whatnot directly to supporters who contribute per creation.

Stuff:

I'm really excited as to what I can share here. Old songs and new. Old videos and new. Writings about life. Germinations of new projects.

Whyeeee?

Intelligence and heart...I want to spread those two things around through my work, and I hope it inspires people to put the same out into the world however they want to in their own way.

Again...Patreon?

I'm go grateful that a bunch of people are helping me make my new album through Kickstarter. We got that on lock, and thank you if you are one of them. This is more of a back door portal to my ongoing work, musings, and archives. Every dollar helps buy a pack of strings, a gallon of gas, an SD card for my camera. Plus, a community is invaluable for an artist and I am glad Patreon provides the platform for us to gather.

How Does It Work?

  • As a Patron, you decide how much you'd like to pay per month, starting at $1
  • I'll post about 2 - 3 things a month...ISH!
  • You'll be billed based on the number of creations posted in the previous month.
  • Whenever you sign up, you'll get all the archived posts too! The more I add, the more you can scroll through.

About Jana:

I have been a writer since I could put my penmanship lessons to good use. My first poem in Kindergarten cleverly used "mat" to rhyme with "cat," and I was on my way. When I was a kid I would hack apart cardboard boxes to make castles, interview myself for hours-long radio shows taped to cassettes (one guest would have a British accent, of course), conduct symphonies from the fireplace hearth while blasting Mannheim Steamroller Christmas songs in June while my parents so kindly did not kill me, and on and on. I have always loved to make stuff and work on art.

When I was 11 I started guitar lessons and quickly made it My Thing. I wrote one song in high school called, dramatically, "My Autumn," but spent the bulk of my teen years learning other writers' songs. In my freshman year of college I played an original at an open mic at The Blue Dragon on Girard in Albuquerque, my friends applauded, and I was off. I wrote all through college, moved to Austin when I had my history degree in hand, and have enjoyed the ride ever since. I've made 4 EPs, hundreds of videos, an eBook about social media strategy, and am working on the newest record right...now.

Aside from playing music, and teaching music, I make a living on the internet. Building websites, helping people with social media strategy, making videos, all that kinda stuff...it's really fun, and I work with really great people.

But I'll be honest...lately I feel like my brain is rotting away due to all the time spent keeping up with the social trends, the newest ways of promoting ourselves, and just trying to be a good citizen who knows what's happening in the world...all done staring at a screen. It doesn't feel very real anymore, and even though the screen is the best delivery mechanism an artist can have, how much does screen time deplete artistic energy to get those ideas from spark to finish?

I've traded in Making Things for pushing out my creativity in small digital doses - Facebook posts, Twitter quips. And I gauge the likes and I adjust my content. Some call it strategy. Lately, I call it hard to deal with as a maker of things.

So...while I am not going to drop off the grid and move to the woods (I like people and Target too much for that), I am going to attempt to log off more and make more things. Write songs, write essays, make videos and vlogs, and overall..apply the energy in something that might last longer than a Facebook post lost in the algorithm.

I'd be honored if you would like to tag along. I think we can build some cool stuff, and the support of a community is always a brilliant fire starter in my world. Thanks for reading.
