About

Welcome, Dear One,

You're here because I invited you, you read something I wrote or experienced something I taught, you recognized a kindred spirit in me, or you were just curious. Welcome.

Over the past 30 years, I've learned a lot about living with long-term chronic illness - both physically and mentally. I've learned a lot about healing and learned that what works for one person might not work for another. I've learned to keep going, even when my mind has trouble finding safe ground. I have a lot of things to share, but even after practicing for so many years, I don't feel quite brave enough. I've been afraid to completely crack open my shell and be vulnerable - to show the things I'm proud of, the things I'm ashamed of, and the chaotic road that carried me this far.

With this Patreon, I'm working to change that story. As my patron, you'll have a front-row seat to the whole messy thing. Who knows - you might just see me thrive and spread some of that healing through my work!

If you're unfamiliar with Patreon or other crowdfunding models, the general idea is that you choose to support a creator whose work you admire by pledging to pay an amount each month. In doing so, you become a patron! Hundreds of years ago, patronage flourished during the Renaissance and was vital for the survival of artists and scientists. Although modern patrons don't typically have the same resources that wealthy Florentines had, patrons play a critical role in supporting creators like writers and artists. On Patreon, the most common model is that the creator will offer you rewards - either each month or for each "thing" they create - based on how much you support them. Some creators do things differently, and I'm no exception.

I'm doing things a little differently than most creators for two essential reasons:

1) I've been chronically ill for 30 years. All the labels and uncertain diagnoses aside - my most significant symptom for many years has been severe, unremitting FATIGUE. So the worst thing I can do for me (and you) is to promise to deliver a bunch of rewards that I just CAN'T deliver (no matter how much I want to). So I'm just going to focus on CREATING and SHARING my creations with you, no matter what they are - blogs, stories, novels, digital artworks, yoga classes, and more - even stream-of-consciousness downloads from my brain!

2) Just like my energy levels, I don't want the size of your bank account to determine whether or not you can support me. I am a firm believer in the "pay-what-you-can" model. Whether you can OFFER $2 a month, $25 a month, or more, your VISIBLE SUPPORT for this (chronically ill and probably crazy) writer, artist, and teacher MEANS SO MUCH. Perhaps in time, I will be able to offer special rewards to my most supportive patrons, but right now, all I can give is my work and my deepest gratitude.

1) I've written about chronic illness and depression since 2012, mostly on the blog Blackbird at Night. Although my output is affected by the ups and downs of my chronic illness, I haven't stopped writing - I've just stopped sharing. I'm going to start SHARING again, both here in my patron-only feed, and on my blogs on blackbirdatnight.com and
janewaterman.com.

2) I've taught chair yoga to people of all ages with both visible and invisible health challenges since late 2016. I had to stop teaching in April 2019 because of the toll on my body. With my illness, my symptoms can get much worse from physical exertion, temperature changes, and more. There is an alternative (something many teachers have discovered during the pandemic), which is giving up the travelling and set-up involved with an in-person class, and teaching from home. I want to figure out how to do that in a sustainable way that lets me get back in some capacity to TEACHING - which I miss so much!

3)
I've written fiction and semi-autobiographical fiction since 1980. I say "semi-autobiographical" because incorporating my life story into fiction is the only way I've been able to tell MY TRUTH and MY STORY. I'd like to return to that writing, take it further, and develop the courage to SHARE it - perhaps even PUBLISH it at last!

Above all, I want to give you a promise. I promise to work at being brave and more vulnerable - to tell you about the experience of chronic illness in general, and my life in particular. It's a huge promise for someone who long believed and understood that it was better to be useful to others, otherwise that I should sit back and shut up.

I want to:

1) SHARE the things I've learned and taught - things that have given me some 5% - 10% more peace and health in the chaos - expressive writing, digital art, chair yoga, and more. I want you to know more about the tools that might help you, whether or not you're chronically ill. To be alive in this very stressful time is difficult, and maybe something I share will make a difference in your life.

2) SHARE my writing through my patron-only journal and early previews of my works-in-progress, including blog posts, workbooks, and other resources based on my experience of chronic illness and the healing modalities I've explored.

3) As my health allows, RECORD and SHARE short chair yoga videos and audios to help people with health challenges to develop a healing yoga and meditation practice.

4) As I gain more support, go through my past body of work and SHARE excerpts from my fiction and autobiographical works, as well as write NEW things. My fiction and autobiographical writings are concerned with themes of physical and mental illness, isolation, dissociation, resilience, and loss. I write in genres of literary fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, and futurism.

5) In time, I'd like to DEVELOP courses and books based on my healing work, as well as PUBLISH my written works. Whenever I do release a significant offering such as a course or book, I will give patrons DISCOUNTS on purchases. I will also ALWAYS consider deeper discounts for those in need.

Not all of what I've envisioned here will happen overnight. A very dear friend of mine once said, "Don't hide your light under a bushel." I have hidden my light (and my shadows) for a long time. I've played small and tried not to stand out. That started changing in 2004 when I first started writing again after a long hiatus, but it's been a slow journey, often hampered by illness and the energy limitations thereof. However, I'm hard-working and patient. I will make these dreams come true. Having your support as a patron will give me the ability to make it happen. So whether you can support me for $2 a month, $25 a month, or more - I am so grateful.

Thank you! I'm sending you love and blessings for the journey ahead of us all.

With love,
me
