My Background
My Bachelor of Fine Arts in Media Arts was awarded from the School of Visual Arts, NYC in 1990 and in 2011 I was granted a Master of Fine Arts with a focus in Painting from Long Island University/Post, Brookville, NY.

As a Graphic Designer/Art Director for a decade and a half I developed seasonal packaging and promotional collections at Estee Lauder. At Merrill Lynch  I established corporate branding for all in house literature, and later for a leading NYC agency. After raising my children, I decided to move from design to expression where I painted for the first time while studying under the guidance of Stan Brodsky, a prominent Long Island painter.

In my work, I integrate collage, screen-printing and photography into my gestural compositions. My work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Newsday, Long Island Pulse and in 2016 as a featured artist on FIOS TV. In 2017, I participated in PLATFORM at New York Transit Museum and in a Summer Residency at School of Visual Arts; which culminated in a solo exhibit which included of a collection of fifty paintings hung in a grid format as well as larger work.

As part of my practice, I create multimedia collages within volumes of Art Journals and enjoy instructing teens through adults on the value and practice of developing ideas and concepts within the sketchbook. These journals are filled with cut paper and found imagery that represent life ongoing. I create imagery that is later used as references for paintings. I look to my books for inspiration when I am stuck or don't know how to proceed with a painting. Often, the original starting point is not where the finished painting will end up.

My work has been exhibited locally, nationally and held in private collections internationally. My paintings are available for sale at SaatchiArt.com/JaniceSztabnik where I have been a featured artist many times for the last several years. I am currently a member of The Critique Group of LI and have served on The Exhibition Committee and Curator for The Huntington Arts Council and Exhibition Committee for The Art League of Long Island.

My Process
Through artwork, I speak to the events of my time, and the values of society. I take my personal experiences and dictate them into art. My paintings are based on the exploration of three factors: the subconscious, improvisation and serendipity. Being that my temperament and style are one of immediacy, working rapidly has advantages best served when unexpected connections and coincidences occur at random.

My primary interest is the representation of the act and substance of painting itself, traced through process. The emotional tones of my autobiographical paintings can be traced through the speed and weight of the brushstrokes, color and scale of imagery. The intention is to create a material and emotional connection with the viewer, who can retrace my gestures and sensations. The paint itself conveys layers of sensation and meaning open to the viewer’s imagination.

The procedure of reworking the surface relates to the reconstruction of relationships, which change and renew themselves over time. My paintings reflect the relationship I have with myself, with others, and mostly with the medium itself. As an artist, I find that I am connected more to the physicality of painting than to the final work.

What Brought Me To Patreon
Being an artist can sometimes be a very introspective and lonely occupation. As probably many other artists do, I think a lot about what I am contributing to society and art history with my work. It is hard not to wonder if it is being appreciated, and I hope to connect with patrons who understand the importance of art in our culture. Being able to support myself through my artwork is something very important to me, and every contribution from a patron can help me to purchase supplies, stay involved in exhibitions and grant opportunities, and spend more time producing artwork.
