Who am I?
Willamette Week called my Hidden History of Portland "a locally focused people's history in the vein of Howard Zinn." Portland Mercury  called me "Portland's most obsessive criminal historian." I'm proud of both. I have dedicated the last 19 years to researching and writing the history of crime in Portland. While my history is often focused on murder and other crime, it is not solely about that. I work in a variety of media writing books and blogposts, as well as songs and musical drama, films and podcasts.
Why am I here?
I recently calculated my hourly rate for the research and writing I have done and it is depressingly small. If I was smart I would just get a full time job and give up on this crazy dream of making a living from writing. I'm not that smart. I would do this even if I didn't make a penny. But there will be a lot less of it if I have to live in a tent on the sidewalk or if I die of starvation or not being able to afford my meds.
Why should you support me?
Because local history matters. No matter where you live. No matter what you do. If we forget it is gone as if it never happened. I will not let us forget Portland's local history. Recently someone suggested that I get a job as a phone solicitor. That's a job I've done before and I'm pretty good at it, except for the stress that causes me to be physically ill and will kill me at a young age if I continue to do it. Do we really need another phone solicitor in the world? We definitely need another local historian. I intend to post something about once a week, but of course you can cap your monthly pledge so you don't go over budget.
How Much Will it Cost?
Your pledge is per post and I intend to post four times per month (depending on how busy I am it might sometimes be fewer than four, there will never be more than four paid posts per month.) You should make a pledge that you feel comfortable with four times a month.  Alternatively you can cap your post at whatever amount works best for you.  Minimum pledge is $1 and if you cap it at $1 you will have access to all posts for that amount.  If that's all you can do, then I am very happy to have your support, but if you can do more please do.

Goals
$20 of $150 per blogpost/podcast or film.
I have several unpublished science fiction stories that almost no one has read. When I reach $150 per blogpost, podcast or film I will create a new ebook of science fiction short stories and give it to all of my Patreon sponsors for free.
