is creating Writing on activism and culture

per medium and longer essays and tutorials

I'm now spending more time writing about culture, politics and activism. Unlike my technology writing, I've written these stories for free. Yet, increasingly, these essays are building a broader response and beginning to have a deeper impact on people's thoughts and conversations.

Last year, I gave ‘Amageddon': How Amazon’s culture is taking a toll on Seattle’s future freely to GeekWire and it generated more than 100k page views and 3k Facebook Likes. I've blogged about Microsoft's multi-billion dollar Nevada tax dodge and its harms to education for more than a decade; I've written a number of other important civic stories freely for Crosscut, the Northwest's most independent non-profit news site. BoingBoing featured the story I gave to Elephant Journal about my recent brain tumor diagnosis, to share some of its deeper reflections more widely. You've Got Male, about the declining Seattle dating scene, generated coverage and conversation around the web, as Peepless in Seattle has begun to do. I wrote about the failure of Obama's presidency in The Day Obama Stopped Teaching. I even wrote about my 30 pound weight loss, a surprisingly popular piece, and Using Science to Heal from Breakups. I've written funny pieces, such as Ten Ways to Make NSA Spying Popular, featured by Slashdot, as well as serious ones, calling on the Internet to be more intelligent about its criticism of FBI tactics, also given to GeekWire. The power, poignancy and vulnerability of my essay on relationship cutoff led to a harassment campaign and a necessary follow up on Internet rage; these touched a lot of people.
