My name is Jenn Frank, and this is my Patreon.

I abdicated the use of this Patreon as a tool for self-publishing back in September 2014 and, as such, haven't published anything here since.
In the past, my Patreon readers paid for three essays (dated June, July, August), which resulted in no small amount of controversy.

This page is still here because I do have an active Patreon account, by which I mean that I do, without apology, support other creators and their work. As long as I do, this page will continue to be publicly viewable.

Now then: returning to the original text of this Patreon page,

Here are some things I've written:

One of my video game previews, titled "He's Still Alive," won the 2013 Games Journalism Prize.

You will not be charged in September (edit: or October, November, or December) 2014. Thanks to you all for your support!

My Work History

Since 2005 I have written professionally about video games. I came out of the gates strong, getting my start as a reviewer for Electronic Gaming Monthly. In 2006 I relocated to California to join Ziff Davis as its CM, where, until 2008, some of my writing appeared in the pages of EGM and Computer Gaming World, and on our website, (During those years I was probably better known for my infrequent appearances on Retronauts, a podcast for old people.)

Since 2008, other reviews, games criticism, and creative nonfiction have appeared in the pages of Kill Screen Magazine and also online at Paste, Unwinnable, Vice Motherboard, GameSetWatch, Gameranx, 1UP, WIRED GameLife, The Guardian, and the New York Times. I have also maintained an inconsistent presence at my website, Infinite Lives.

I've also provided the voice for two video games, Super Hexagon and the upcoming VIDEOBALL. (Thanks to the honors Super Hexagon received, I am technically a BAFTA nominee.) I lent my voice, too, to an anthropomorphic inhaler in an educational cartoon for kids with asthma.

I graduated from Northwestern University in 2004 with academic honors and a degree in fiction writing (yes, that is a real thing); my concentration was Russian lit. For the next two years I worked as a Chicago-area actor and musician, and also in retail, at a "designer toy" gallery. Inspired by both GMR and the community itself, I began writing about video games, just for fun, during my final year of college.

What You Get

This is a monthly subscription plan, but you may opt out at any time. Incredibly, I think PayPal folks cannot pay out! I myself discovered this the hard way: Most of my friends responsibly rate themselves 18+ (I think I did, too!), and because PayPal does not fund "pornography" (oh, lord), apparently you have to pay all us unsavory sorts by credit or debit card.

Patreon automatically bills you on the 31st. If I'm ever unable to make that deadline, though, I'm able to sort of "skip a month," and you won't be charged anything. If you only wish to subscribe for one piece, you can cancel anytime after you've been fulfilled. (Or if you feel unfulfilled, as the case might be.)

I'm told I should establish "milestones," which are actually "stretch goals." Maybe I will write a song, or compose new lyrics to a recognizable one, or draw some doodles. Maybe I'll add illustrations to my essays. Maybe I will write something daringly funny. If you have any ideas or direction for me, let me know!

What I Get

This is a very important supplemental (er, not-so-supplemental, actually) source of income for me. You're probably curious about what I intend to do with this money.

  • I get to pay all sorts of bills! Mostly taxes and medical.
  • I will honor the amounts my mother intended to bequeath to her loved ones, and then I will shout "consider this estate EXECUTED!"
  • If I work diligently, I will continue to own this house.
  • I plan to pay the rest out in support of others.

Thank you so much for subscribing!
