Hey!  You found me on Patreon.

I’m Jen, and I write stuff.  Since “stuff” is a little vague:  I write a lot of fiction (more on that later), I’ve done some freelance work for printed publications, I write regular book reviews, I’ve dabbled in poetry.  But my main focus for the past 12 years has been my blog, The Path Less Taken, and its accompanying Facebook page. That’s likely how you got here, and if so: Thank you.  And you’re awesome.

The Path Less Taken started out as a sort of online journal of my unschooling days with my kids who, at the time, were still quite small.  It gradually and organically grew into what it is today… a space where I mostly write in a more general way about unschooling and gentle, respectful parenting. I am passionate about spreading the word about living more peacefully with your children.

While those topics are still the heart and soul of my blog, I’ve branched out even more and also write about random slice of life stuff, issues of faith (I’m one of those weirdo liberal Christians who believes that Christianity should be about loving people rather than judging them), current events, having bipolar, and mental health in general.  All of the above breaks just about every rule of the “You need to stick to a very specific NICHE!” people, but I’ve never been much of a rule follower. :)

So why am I on Patreon?

I live to write.  To me, writing is like breathing.  But it also requires a lot of time, a lot of mental energy, and a lot of coffee.  And being compensated financially for any sort of freelance writing (especially blogging) is…. tricky.  Like a lot of bloggers, I’ve made a few dollars here and there with things like ads and affiliate sales.  I’ve also made some money writing articles for offline publications. To be honest, I very much prefer blogging. Why?  It’s more personal. Blogging is as much about the community as it is about the writing. I love the comments, the messages you send me, the conversations on Facebook. Blogging is about YOU just as much as it is about me.  It’s also some of the most intimate writing I’ve ever done, and I don’t see myself ever stopping.

For a time, I had a virtual “tip jar” installed on my page. I figured it was a low pressure way for people to voluntarily help out, and was way more personal - and relevant - than the couple of cents I’d get for someone clicking on a Google ad.  Several people generously donated (THANK YOU!!), but it didn’t take long for me to realize that that system was limited and uncomfortably one-sided.  While it gave you a chance to say, “Hey, I like your work. Thank you”, it didn’t provide me with any way to thank YOU.

That’s where Patreon comes in!

The Patreon platform lets you get directly involved in what I'm making.  It makes it easy for anyone who wants to financially back my work to do so (you can pledge a recurring monthly donation of $1 a month, $3, $5, whatever fits your budget and your comfort level), AND it gives me a way to give back to you too!!  When you become a Patron, you become an even more active participant in my writing process.  You'll be invited to join a secret Facebook group just for Patrons.  You’ll also be able to access Patron-only content such as written posts and videos, and behind-the-scene looks at what I'm working on next.  You can communicate with other Patrons; and you can message me and let me know about any unschooling or parenting-related topics you’d like me to write about on the blog.  And remember when I said I liked to write fiction?  Well, I’m starting a new novel, and would love to share it with all you!

And finally, you have my deepest and sincerest gratitude. All of you. Whether you become a Patron or whether you continue to read my posts as before.  I so, so appreciate you for reading what I write, for sharing my posts, for your “likes” and comments and shares.  You rock and you’re awesome and I love you.  Your support means the world to me.

On Tuesdays, I go to therapy.  On the way home, I always stop for a coffee as a "Congratulations to you;  you made it through another week of therapy" treat.  Sometimes, the thought of that coffee is the only thing that gets me through the hour (I so wish I was joking)  When you pledge at this level, you are buying me that coffee, and literally contributing to my bettering my mental health.

I love you.  In a completely appropriate, not at all creepy internet stalker sort of way. Seriously, anything at this level is above and beyond, and is so deeply and sincerely appreciated.

At this level, you'll receive everything above, but I don't currently have anything else to offer you (except, as previously stated, my undying - non-creepy - eternal love) :)
Goals
$52 of $100 per month
After a year of very sporadic posting due to dealing with health issues, I am back and ready to focus on creating great content for you, including:

  • New posts at least once a week
  • New video once a month
  • Daily interaction on Facebook

Next step?  Save up some money for a new laptop, as mine has become slow and unpredictable (which isn't too conducive to writing!)

Thank you so much for your support, and for joining me in this journey xoxo
