Hi! My name is Jen Williams. I’m a writer from London, responsible for chunky fantasy books such as The Copper Promise, the first book in the Copper Cat trilogy, and The Ninth Rain, the opening volume in The Winnowing Flame series. If you’re here, you probably know me through those books – or, you might know me from twitter, where I chatter a lot about video games, cartoons, the horror of my commute, stuff like that.
I’m hoping this Patreon could go some way to supporting my fiction writing, while also giving readers access to both extra story content and an insight into the whole writing process. When writing epic fantasy, you tend to end up with assorted bits and bobs that are useful for the writer to know, but can’t really go in the book due to timing and pacing issues. But they’re still kind of fun – like DVD extras I suppose. And they can give insights into the books that could be pretty revealing. When did Wydrin first pick up a sword, for example? What exactly did Sebastian do while he was a knight? What was Frith’s relationship actually like with his brothers? The Copper Cat Correspondence is my way of filling in back-story, deepening the reader’s experience of the books, and basically giving you the juicy gossip on the characters.

But I’ve already bought all your books! Why should I give you more money?
First of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH! Secondly, of course there’s no obligation to support me this way, and if you want to enjoy the books as they are with no extras, that’s totally cool. The Patreon offers extra bits and bobs if you would like them, and a closer look at the life of a fantasy writer in London.

If you would like to go ahead and support me, remember you can always drop out or change your level at any time – I know very well how circumstances change and things can get a little tighter. I am hugely thankful for every bit of support, you wonderful people.

Join me at the tavern of your choice, and SINK A PINT OF MEAD (or something more sensible)
Here is a quick rundown of the two main things I’m offering, with some little notes on the higher level options.

$1 level – The Hands of Fate tavern
Patrons at this tavern – the sort of tavern where deals are done and quests are planned – have access to a fortnightly newsletter post. As well as all possible news on my books and general stuff on writing (release dates, events, covers, writing tips, convention diaries and so on) this will also include more idiosyncratic items, such as my adventures on the bus, reports on the best pubs in London, what I’m reading at the moment and entirely random Top Fives – Top Five things that annoyed me this Thursday, Top Five Leotard Wearers in 80s Cartoons, and so on. Also photos of my cat. Think of it as a wild expansion of my twitter feed.

$5 level – The Scurvy Lemon tavern
Subscribers propping up the bar in The Scurvy Lemon have access to The Copper Cat Correspondence post (and the fortnightly newsletter). Once a month I will post a letter, or even a series of letters, from the characters of the Copper Cat novels, as well as journal entries from Lady Vincenza ‘Vintage’ de Grazon from The Ninth Rain. Want to read Frith’s complaint letters? Wydrin’s bar bill? Sebastian’s poetry? Over time, you may see broader stories evolving between the lines… If you would like extra glimpses into the lives of these characters, this is the tavern for you.

The fancy taverns
There are a handful of higher levels for those people who a) are impossibly generous souls, b) probably saints of some sort and c) would like to receive physical things through the post. There are signed books available (signed meaning personalized and covered in dragons, probably), special handwritten versions of Copper Cat Correspondence with authentically aged-looking paper and doodles from the Copper Cat herself, as well as special original artworks. These will be a one off pieces made specially for patrons – I did study illustration at art college and I am reasonably good at drawing stuff, so it might not be enormously terrible. Whatever it is, it will definitely be unique, and signed by me.

If you’re still here reading this – thank you. If you’ve decided you would like to support me and my work, may dinosaur-angels bless your bottom forever more.
