About Jes Lee

I am a creator, a visual story teller.
Photography is my main medium, my visual voice. I use that voice to create digital, layered photographs, photo polymer photogravure prints, and hand-made books.
Almost all of my images start with a film photograph. I use mostly medium format and large format film, scanning negatives into my computer, and use a combination of analog and digital techniques to create my finished pieces.
Our bodies of water hold memory of the space they occupy; how the space has changed over the centuries, how the surroundings change. They hold the memory of our footprints on this earth, the memories of centuries of inhabitants within and without.
In my recent work I documented a year of Lake Superior’s memories. These photographs were taken with medium format film from the same vantage points at four locations along the north shore. I photographed each location once per month from May 2018 through May 2019. The final photography journey to these locations was embarked on one year from the date I started, completing the cycle. I layered the images from each place together, lining up shorelines and rocks, and created an image documenting a year of that place.
I want to document more of our water's memories in this way. Starting in May I will be embarking on another project, this time to document a portion of the Mississippi River. By supporting me as a Patreon, you will have access to behind the scenes progress photos, stories of my monthly photo trips, and work in progress not shared on other social media platforms.
