For months I've been seeking a reliable source of income that would also satisfy my devotion to creating a better world. Of course, there are people who think that's an unreasonably tall order, and my dad even said: Promise me, even if a Trump supporter offers you a job, you'll take it. Funny enough, that hasn't happened. Instead, I've been applying for work while supporting local activists at Indivisible Tacoma and global activists through The Pachamama Alliance.
With such a full and satisfying life, I asked myself if there was a way I could continue what I was already doing, stop worrying about money, and fully commit myself to the work I love. If I did that, I realized, I could also expand my focus, document the strategies I'm developing, and share them with people around the country.
First I thought of GoFundMe and KickStarter, but then I learned about Patreon. Patreon is like an ongoing Kickstarter; it's a way for people who care about someone's work to provide financial support at whatever level they wish, and get something in return.
In my case, ongoing financial support would provide a reasonably stable income that pays the bills and allows me to take care of my kids, while also furthering my efforts to transform formerly apathetic, non-voting, politi-phobes into a force for democratic change the world has never known. In other words, a successful Patreon campaign would enable my work as an activist and thought leader to grow and thrive.
Do you have to pay? Absolutely not. I will continue my work with Indivisible Tacoma, The Pachamama Alliance and engaged individuals no matter what. It's what I do. But would you like to pay?
- Would you contribute a few dollars a month to fulfill your desire to unseat the current administration and create a new model to replace our broken political culture?
- Would you contribute a few dollars a month to assuage your fears and contribute to a more humane and earth-friendly future?
- Would you contribute a few dollars a month to vicariously experience what you wish you could do, if you didn't already have a job and a mortgage.
What will your money do? My first goal is a regular subscription base of $2000/month to cover basic expenses. Once that goal is met, I'll post additional goals to finance educational and networking opportunities that will further my growth as an activist, leader and communicator.
One important thing to know about Patreon is that it's built with both artists and Patrons in mind. When I release a new video or blog, I'll send out an official post announcing it. You'll then have until the end of the month to decide if you still want to support my work. That way, you're not stuck supporting something you don't love or no longer believe in.
Of course, there are other ways to pay the bills. But in considering why I haven't already gotten any of the many jobs I've applied for, I've had to admit that this option not only feels good, it's also the only one I know of that will take my contributions to the next level and allow me to do things I've dreamed of for years.
