Blossoms and Leaves
Thank you for helping me make a living as a creative person! You will get access to the patron-only feed, plus the downloadable mp3s and handwritten lyrics/doodles, AND at least once every season, I will do a YouTube video on some theme like vulnerability, creative flow, etc which will include answering any questions YOU ask (DM or post) ...it could be general or personal (creatively speaking, not my personal life lol :), like about lyric meanings, writers' life, touring, creative unblocking a.k.a. how to completely abolish writers' block, requests for live performances nearby, or I could even play you some song requests in the video, even cover songs?...the sky's the limit. Let me know what you'd like me to include in these dedication videos!! (note: if there are no requests in a season, I'm sure I'll still make lots of content on my YouTube :) Thank you for being a superfan! :)
About Jessica in The Rainbow
My name is Jessica and I write dream folk + existential lo-fi pop songs. I’ve lived a very strange but charmed life, musically speaking – through years of self-exploration, I’ve found my voice (and very specific genre), released multiple studio quality independent albums (+ tons of lofi ones too), almost had a song in a Chrysler commercial in the Super Bowl once, had my music featured in an award-winning movie-musical, had a 4-week professional run of a musical I wrote in grad school, I've even had the surreal experience of famous people singing my songs and being incredibly kind and supportive.
But I'm here on Patreon because, the truth of the music industry is that...no matter how many years we commit to it, or how hard we work, if our focus is on original work - our truest art, if you will - then it rarely pays. Most of these things listed above paid me at the hobbyist level, or not at all.
I realized that if I could find a small crowd of people who love me and find value in this music I create, and wanted to become my online fan base of patrons, that I might find a way to truly sustain this path - without wondering if whether at a certain age I have to “give up” and “be practical” or start caring more about building a “serious business” like online piano lesson tutorials or something (one of many suggestions given to me over the years, which I don't think I'd be very good at - my strength as a teacher is one-on-one, in an intuitive adaptable manner - and ultimately, my heart is so focused on this songwriting path, that any other big 'side dream' or 'hustle' like a huge online business doesn't seem to measure up).
Also I work very hard already. A couple years ago, I wrote about 500 songs in 365 days (the official self-created challenge was a song a day for a year, but I went overboard at times). Then last year I released 12 albums in 12 months on Bandcamp. This year, I began a year-long challenge called '52 Dreams' just to attempt to tackle all the 'to-dos' and side dreams that go along with being an independent musician - so much of it I was already doing, but some of it requires a devoted week's worth of attention: writing to labels and venues and booking shows and curating shows for friends and fellow musicians, being in multiple projects including a band (cloudlight) and performing multiple times a month (sometimes multiple times a week!), and lately even booking small tours, as it's the best way to connect with others in the industry. One year I even started a small music festival for a few friends of mine, and ended up helping 30+ different women and some charities. This is just the unpaid work...I also run a 30+ student piano/songwriting lesson studio, to pay the bills, and pass on what I know as a mentor.
If I'm completely honest, I don’t want to change a thing about my current work flow, it feels like a calling and I suspect it's useful to just the right amount of people - it’s just that my income is a little too snug to sustain it for too much longer – without suspecting that I should really “grow up” and be more practical soon.
But I feel like artists and creative types are truly needed in this world - and we've lost our way in a world with free music streaming, and no real direct patrons of the arts anymore...I could write for grants and residencies, but again, that does not create a sustainable path. Just more stipends and one-time payments, that thousands of artists are competing for...one time I spent $35 in an application fee and weeks worth of work, preparing a submission for one of these. There really are very few direct paths for creatives.
And if you're on the fence about giving some quirky lil artist type money - the fact that I've followed this path for over a decade for little to no money/fame should show you that my intentions are pure :) I will continue this path with all the same love and passion and creativity as always, and despite giving me money, I will never make it about the money - which is important, as my value for you is related to seeing the world through a softer lens, and I think I would lose my strange value if it became "about the money." :)
So if you’d like to come on board as a patron, I would love to have your support – and share my way of looking at life with you. Check out little perks and packages at the different levels. I’m still growing into this Patreon thing, but it seems like a good place to grow, and share with you.
