I'm an activist, public speaker, and clergy person who blogs about religion, ethics, politics, activism, gaming and pop culture, and queer culture. Your support would encourage me to create more, and enable me to spend more time creating videos, podcasts, and other content. In my writing and speaking I try to create work which is principled, civil, and passionate. I was raised on Shakespeare, Sagan, and Star Trek, and I'm a proud, gay Humanist.

Who am I?

I'm a Humanist clergy person. I know - it sounds weird to me too. But what it means is simple: I play all the roles of a traditional clergy person in a religious congregation, except that we don't do god. I serve the Ethical Society of St. Louis, a community of people trying to live more ethical lives and to make a more ethical world . As Outreach Director I represent the congregation in the St. Louis community and beyond through writing, public speaking, marching in rallies, and participating in protests. I'm kind of like an atheist priest - without the fancy hat and robes. I blog at Temple of the Future, where I present a compelling and ethical view of life without god.

Why am I asking for your money?

  1. It will encourage me to create more! Yes, I'm using you as a motivational tool to prevent me from procrastinating. I want to write more, podcast more, and make more videos, and by supporting my work you will help me do all those things - so, thank you!
  2. I want to be able to spend more of my time writing. Because of my unique job I'm often engaged in activism around many different issues, but I don't always find time to write about it. Your support will enable me to turn my experience into useful insights for you!

What do I write about?

Ethics and Religion
I like to write about all the big questions of life - Who are we? Why are we here? What is our purpose? How should we treat each other? - from an entirely non-religious perspective. Sometimes I criticize traditional religious views, but more often I'm interested in presenting a positive Humanist view of life. Here's a post about the ethics of martyrdom I particularly like.

Politics and Activism
I'm an activist and proud of it. I've been volunteering in politics since I was a teenager, and now a large amount of my work is writing about, speaking about, and being an activist about issues I care about. Since I've moved to St. Louis I've blocked streets with Black Lives Matter, helped plant the first Trans Memorial Garden in the USA, lobbied the MO state house to invest in clean energy, and led a clergy coalition to oppose an anti-LGBTQ "religious freedom" law (we won!). On my blog you'll see reports of my activism like this one, about my experience as a Black Lives Matter activist in St. Louis.

Gaming and Pop Culture
I'm a huge nerd: I love gaming, and science fiction & fantasy of all kinds. I promise to write more about this! I'll write about Overwatch, Stranger Things, and why I still love Bioshock after all these years. I even intend to start streaming some of my gaming sessions if I get enough support (follow me on Twitch here!).

Gay Stuff
I'm a proud gay Englishman, and I like to write about queer culture: the rich art, music, fashion, and social innovation queer people have crafted from our experience of oppression. I believe LGBTQ people have made an enormous contribution to the world despite our small numbers and the challenges we have faced, and I celebrate that in my work. Here's a post I wrote for National Coming Out Day!
