  THE SHORT OF IT

Hi there. My name is Joey Sellers, and I'm creating a mess. It wasn't my original intent, but 24 years into my creative practice, I'm finally embracing my inability to package my efforts into a sensible and easily explained offering.

In the broadest possible sense, my aim is simple: I want to use my creative powers to be a wildcard player in the universal fight for good.

I'm asking for your support so that I can utilize my skills as a writer, conceptual artist, data scientist, and independent researcher to develop, communicate and activate ideas for making the world a more thoughtful and enlightened place.

  REGARDING THE MESS

The mess is an ever-shifting mass of projects, prototypes and proposals. The more support I get, the more it can come to life. Priorities shift with the times, and projects run in parallel to maximize connections and perspectives. Here's what is currently on tap...

Unsolicited.Consulting: Coming January 1, it will be exactly what it says, and unlike every other project on here, I'm not saying a word about it until it launches. Stay tuned for a new force in the universe...

2019 Calendar: Back in 2008, you already didn't need a wall calendar. The iPhone had only been released the year before, but even without smartphones ingrained in the culture, many people were already using digital calendars. However, in the bare spot left on the wall, I saw an opportunity. Since no one really needed a wall calendar to be their functional calendar, I was able to take liberties with the format, experimenting with and evolving the idea of checking the date. So far there has been...

For 2019, I'm developing the most simple and efficient design possible to chart the days of the year and believe it will be the perfect guide for helping us focus in the challenging days ahead.

50 States of Mind is a data project exploring, visualizing and analyzing government data on the 50 states. You can check out pre-launch action on Big As Data. Starting with the Census Bureau's American Community Survey and economic data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the plan is to curate a dataset stat by stat, analyze and shape the research into a mix of rankings and analysis highlights to create concise profiles on each state. This cast of larger-than-life characters only think about themselves while nonetheless having a national impact. The goal here is to move us beyond a blur of city names, attractions and stereotypes to a better understanding of our neighbors, from sea to shining sea.

2020: The Year We See Clearly is an idea whose time is quickly approaching. Here we start with the notion of 20/20 eyesight and are looking for opportunities to use the year 2020 as a vehicle for exploring what it means to see clearly and workshopping how we could go about doing so. At a time when truth and reality have suddenly come up for debate, and with technology poised to make telling the difference between fact and fiction all the more difficult, our ability to see clearly has never been so challenged. How would this concept play out? I want to explore the idea of putting together an event, if not a whole conference, on this subject for sometime in 2020. With your support, I think we could do something both cool and needful.

I Ching Study: Also known as The Book of Changes, I think of the I Ching as a database of change, and seek to explore the relationships and flow of events connecting the 64 hexagrams you see below.

I've been laying the groundwork for the start of this project over the last six months and in 2019 would like to create a variety of visualizations I have sketched out for mapping the possibilities and pathways laid out in this ancient Chinese oracle.

But wait, there's more!: These are just the major projects currently floating around. The mess comes in all shapes, sizes and manifestations, so prepare for ideas to always be flying around in every direction. Who knows where they will lead or what we'll be working on next?!

  PATRON REWARDS

Here's how this works: You provide me with indispensable support so that I can do my work, and in return, you get front row seats to the madness and earn tickets you can trade in for an ever-changing lineup of special prizes, including artwork and mementos from the archive, along with new work, samples and prototypes.

For every $2 of your patronage, you will earn 1 ticket. At $1/month, you would get a ticket every two months. At $2/month, you would get 1 ticket/month.

The more you pledge, the more tickets you earn, and the more work I can do!

Check out the current lineup of available prizes below. (And check back soon as new prizes under 20 tickets are being added this week as part of a tier and reward reorg going on Nov 2018.)

On Saying Less - 5 TICKETS

Get a copy of The Shut Up Society's stark brochure, On Saying Less (2009), and meditate on all the things that need not be said.

A Map from My Collection - 10 TICKETS

The Information Age has enabled us to disconnect from the world while having the impression of knowing it. Content here today, gone today. So imagine the change in atmosphere when you get a thoughtfully random selection from my collection of vintage National Geographic maps!? Compare for yourself the experience of unfolding a physical map with the pinching and stretching of the one on your phone. Alternate reading the map with considering the challenge of designing such a thing. Not just the representations, but the dots and the letters. The map is not the territory, it's a little world of its own, mimicking part of ours.

The "Have A Nice Dot" Calendar - 20 TICKETS

Ape Con Myth's 2011 Calendar lets you choose your own adventure with the days of your life. Connect the dots and track your own path through the year, with your only obligation being getting to the designated first day of each month.

Does it make a picture when you are finished? Only if you draw one!

Though it might say 2011 on the cover, this calendar's 365 dots can work for any year, and you have full artistic license in adding a dot for a leap.

Perfect for anyone who likes to be asked, "What's that?"

Signed Periodic Calendar - 45 TICKETS

16" x 38" poster print

Meet the last calendar you're ever going to need, signed by its creator!

Yes, in 2012 I invented a new perpetual calendar system inspired by the Periodic Table of Elements. By flipping our perspective around from a focus on the day of the month to the day of the week, the Periodic Calendar breaks out seven types of years to create a calendar system capable of exploring past, present and future dates as never before.

  Deployment Prints - 100 / 150 TICKETS

11" x 14" / 18" x 24" premium luster prints

For Deployment (2009), I tagged New York City with the initials of Ape Con Myth by placing 38 installations of plastic army men across 3 boroughs. Pick your favorite and get a print from the series to liven up your walls.

Reality is a Puzzle Print - 125 TICKETS

18" x 28" matte archival print - Quantity: 3

From Reality is a Puzzle (2008), this was the last of 11 chalkboards I produced as part of a comprehensive breakdown of reality executed while reassembling 11 jigsaw puzzles whose pieces I had mixed together a decade before. This visualization sums up Ape Con Myth's conceptual playing field, which involves all the human concepts and institutions governing our individual struggle for survival on Earth.

West of the Mississippi - 250 TICKETS

53" x 69" map collage

Part of a new series, Misrepresentations of the United States (2018), West of the Mississippi is a collage of vintage National Geographic maps that do not quite add up. The prototype pictured is currently up in my office and you can get one of your own while supplies last!

  800-1000 - 400 TICKETS

24" x 74" matte archival print - Quantity: 1

In the The Tao Jones (2008), I paired passages from the Tao Te Ching with relevant periods from the full history of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. In 800-1000, you are seeing the 18 year period during which the Dow bounced between those numbers. Only one print from the series has been made to date, and it is this over-sized beauty.
