Hi, John here. I’m a writer, child sexual abuse survivor-activist, and climate change activist among other things of course. In addition to – and related to – CSA and climate change, my concerns include personal and societal journeys of healing and enlightenment. Welcome to my space on Patreon, where, if you choose, you can support my writing for just one dollar a month.

When my father raped me when I was a child, his hands were around my neck, choking me to silence whenever I would start to cry out so I wouldn't wake anyone else in the house. (He came to my bed in the middle of the night to do it.) He choked me until I passed out, and when I came to after he'd finished, he told me he would kill me if I ever told anyone.

Now, through my writing, I've told the world. See, for example, my autobiographical novella, Preludes: A Story of Child Sexual Abuse from a Child's Perspective in a Middle Class American Family, available for free download at the Amazon Kindle store (this is the link for the US Kindle store) and other ebook stores. This bearing witness to my experience and survival of child sexual abuse, and to my recovery, as an adult, from its effects, is a central component of my quest, through my writing and other aspects of my life, for enlightenment, and of my efforts to contribute to the creation of a better, more enlightened world.

As a child, I was deprived, literally, of my breath and my voice by my abuser in his efforts to enforce my silence about the abuse. That's why now, for me, writing can feel as essential as the act of breathing. Through my writing, I seek to give – whether literally or metaphorically, directly or by extension – breath and voice to the survivor that lived at the heart of my child self; to children suffering sexual abuse even as I write these words, and you read them; to the challenges and healing experienced by CSA survivors worldwide; to people suffering various other injustices experienced on a daily basis by the oppressed; to aspirations for a world free – or as free as is humanly possible – of oppression's myriad forms; and to an exploration of humane and enlightened pathways towards the realization of such a world.

And I seek to give voice to the feelings and experiences of people worldwide with respect to the ever-heightening, global environmental crisis, the acutest component of which is, of course, global warming.

All the while, I explore various dialectics – of despair and hope, escapism and engagement, and others – that are part and parcel of the human condition.

But to accomplish these objectives through my writing, I need adequate supplies of time and energy.

And that's where you – through your backing me on Patreon – come in.

(Brief aside:
Not sure how you got here, so if you haven’t already and would like to get to know me and my writing better, please visit my site – johnbrookswriting.com . For now I'm making all or most of my content free, so don't hesitate to follow the links to my fiction, poetry, and other work.)

Patreon is a 21st century incarnation of the traditional, patron-based method of supporting artists, enabling small-donation, crowdfunded support of artists on an ongoing basis, which can provide an artist with the backing they need to develop their art to its fullest potential, give supporters exclusive access to the artist's life and work, and benefit society with a rich and diverse artistic culture freed from the often artistically stultifying influences of conventional gatekeepers (such as, in the case of writing, publishing companies).

And when it comes to supporting me and my writing in particular, "small-donation" means the smallest donation possible: just one dollar (US) a month.

It’s pretty simple: your patronage fuels my writer’s work.

Put another, quite personal way – detailed above, under "ABOUT ME" – when it comes to my writing, your patronage helps me breathe.

Writing is all about time, energy, and focus – having enough of these to brainstorm the content (or, more often, let the content to come to you), develop it through outlines and drafts, and complete, then publish, the final (at least for the time being – hats off to revised and expanded editions!) version.

Your support empowers this process. To the degree that you and others back me on Patreon, I'm freed from having to meet my basic needs (rent, utilities, food, etc.) through other means – freed to focus on my writing, which I hope will continue to prove worthy of your patronage by offering enlightenment about the above-noted issues, motivation for taking action to deal with these issues effectively, and in other respects – intrinsic literary merit among them – as well.

In exchange for your support, I'm happy to offer various rewards such as the following:

You'll receive an inside pass to my writer's life via my patrons-only activity feed (see below, or, perhaps, elsewhere, depending on the device you're using for viewing this) that may include, among other things, advance or exclusive releases of:
– updates on my current projects and writing-related activities;
– observations and musings from my daily life, external and internal, that resonate in one way or another with my writing;
– posts on central interests of my writing, including child sexual abuse and climate change;
– video posts on my YouTube channel, released initially via private links, including where-I'm–at–now updates and my readings of my poetry, fiction, and other work;
– excerpts from my working drafts of various works along with my comments;
– my commentary on material I've published;
– posts on my personal journey of healing presenting photos, letters, and other artifacts from my family history, along with my accompanying commentary.

In addition, you'll have an opportunity to join and help build a community of my core supporters, here on Patreon and elsewhere, with the possibility of enjoying mutual support and interaction with myself and your fellow supporters. (Such mutual support and interaction could, for example, include suggestions and discussion of which NGOs, officeholders, candidates, and initiatives focused on the welfare of children, on global warming, and on other vital issues are most worthy of our support.)

And, as a member of my core support community, you'll be able to offer your input on my writing (which I'll welcome!) to help catalyze my creative process.

(Post comments to my posts on my Patreon activity feed and/or tap or click on "Community" in the top horizontal menu bar to post your input and to see mine and that of fellow supporters.)

As another feature of your inside pass and one that I hope will provide particular insight into my writing process, I'll provide early or exclusive access to screenshot-like videos of me reading through excerpts of drafts of my works (from rough to close to submission-/publication-ready) and sometimes making revisions.

I'm planning to make some posts on my website's blog exclusively for patrons only.

On top of all this, you can receive acknowledgement – via my social media and/or published work – as one of my core supporters (unless, of course, you would prefer anonymity).

If the above resonates positively and you find my writing worthy, I would be most grateful for your support.

Thank you for your consideration.

HELP BUILD OUR COMMUNITY
My goal on Patreon (as well as my website, johnbrookswriting.com, my social media, and elsewhere) is, simply, to build a community of core supporters. Supporters who, through the backing they provide me on Patreon, can empower my writing process; who share my quest to help create a better, more enlightened world; and who feel my writing can contribute to this quest and is otherwise worthy of their support.
Hope you’ll join our community by supporting me on Patreon.
