WELCOME TO THE HOW MIGHT WE PODCAST

ABOUT THE PODCAST: Exploring wiser alternatives

We live in extraordinary times where we have the greatest opportunities for progress ever but hear only bad news. On the flip side, we face huge global challenges but even the most powerful deny this, to logic defying degrees.

The How Might We Podcast is my vehicle to discuss these complex issues like education, democracy, technology, ageing, neuroscience with opti-realism* in dialogue with eye-opening thinkers and tinkerers.

When I look at sacred cows (like school for instance), I see their logic unravel quickly. By going down to first principles thinking, I'm exploring potentially wiser alternatives to these 'givens'. An antidote to the sentence 'But that's just the way things are'. Because behind, there are amazing new opportunities to get the real job done.

It's liberating and I'm hearing from listeners that the podcast has already had a small tangible impact, which is humbling to hear.

YOUR SUPPORT:
Podcast;

Each podcast episode takes me a lot unpaid time though. Hours of reading to prepare for each guest, time to clean audio, admin to schedule guests, basic communications to get the podcast seen. Your subscription will support that and subscribers will get access to Q&A Episodes.

Books;
I am providing ongoing listeners with digital access to my short books (more thorough and thought through than mere blog posts, yet more frequent and digestible than lengthy books). Currently this includes Democracy SquaredTales of Cool Companies and soon (likely this November 2018) Tech-Monopolies: A Short Rant

Video Courses and more;
Several listeners have requested short video courses, for inspiration about alternatives to traditional ways of living, working and seeing the world, or in the words of one listener for: "people who want to understand themselves and how they fit into the larger machine of what we call life". When this Patreon is successful, I will develop these content packs. This may also include Live Webinars with guest thinkers.

MONEY:
If you value the podcast or would like access to this other content, please subscribe by contributing what you feel applicable to this Patreon page on a monthly basis.

I have provided different tiers with the same benefits at different prices. This is because money is subjective and I don't want to bias you to picking a particular price. That is up to you and what you feel comfortable with. I want your relationship with this project to feel good. Please select a tier or set your own price at checkout. [more on this logic below**]

TECH-MONOPOLIES CONTENT:
By December I hope to have launched my new short book Tech-Monopolies: A Short Rant. I'd love to give subscribers a really valuable experience by producing the following over a few months:
• Special Smartphone Guided Meditation: I've designed this to help people gain a concrete experience and realisation over the impact of their phones on their psychology
• Short Video Course: A simple pack of about 4-6 videos with tips to hack your way out of some of your more negative smartphone behaviours
• List of alternatives: There are alternatives to addictive or invasive apps, I'll make a list of them
• 'Audiobook': I've not done this before so no idea how long it takes. My idea for now is to make a kind of informal version. Which means I'll read through it, but not word for word. I'll 'read like I speak' if you see what I mean. Again, not sure how much work this is...

This is my aspiration at least. If I get even part of the above done, I think it'll be valuable for subscribers.

THANK YOU
In the meantime, I want to thank you for supporting the podcast and subsequent other projects. Doing this work is only made interesting by your interest.

Thanks and take care,
Jon

*Opti-realism:
A term coined by french positive psychologist Jacques Lecomte which puts forward a view of the world that uses optimism for its proven ability to generate positive change, whilst also being grounded in reason and reality.

**Why Pay-What-You-Want:
The internet is wonderful, but the economy it has brought about is largely messed-up. The richest companies of all time are making money off our work whilst we volunteer our time and feed them our work and data for free. Advertising is the most prominent business model but it means taking a big hit to our intellectual honesty and is the source of the misuse of psychological sciences for manipulative ends. (More in Tech-Monopolies: A Short Rant) This has also created a culture where artists and thinkers have to give away their work for free which isn't practical for the future and the sharing of important ideas. I have seen my work add real value to people's lives, and I believe the ideas shared through this project are transformative. The intention is to benefit people in really tangible ways. So if you get value from this work and want to support it, please do so by subscribing here on a Monthly 'Pay-What-You-Want' basis. One way to look at this is through the Buddhist concept of Dāna, in that you contributing to the podcast and the project, is what makes it possible to be produced and therefore for other people to benefit from it too.
