Hello lovely Patrons!

My name is Jourdain Searles, and I create culture criticism.

I am a freelance writer covering film, television, feminism, race, and culture. I have written for Bitch Media, The RingerPaste Magazine and Thrillist, among other publications. You can view my portfolio here. I have done contract screenwriting for Gigantic Pictures, located in New York City. I have also written theatrical pieces for the non-profit Realize Your Beauty. One more thing: I co-host the Bad Romance Podcast, which has its own patreon page.

I am the creator, editor and primary contributor to fishnet cinema, a feminist film and media critique site. With fishnet, I aim to analyze the depiction of women and femmes in entertainment. Many pieces on the site focus on the work and depiction of women in film, television, animation and other forms of performance. I also run the official twitter for the site (@fishnetcinema). This website is a labor of love and I currently make no money from the essays I publish there.

In addition to my writing for publications and fishnet, I also have a Medium account where I write very personal pieces. This Patreon also supports those pieces which you can read here.

I also run a solo podcast!

The Shady Lady Podcast is my feminist interview show. Each episode I sit down with an artist of some kind (often women) and discuss a topic that is important to them, whatever it may be. I like to provide a space for them to talk about their art and discuss subjects that are burning in their brain. This podcast is more sporadic. I would like it to be monthly, but the time it takes to coordinate with guests and edit our conversations can be extensive. I would like to get this podcast back on a monthly schedule.

These projects, in one way or another, require money to exist, thrive and grow. I'm a freelancer and college grad, so needless to say I don't have money in the bank. Still, I believe that my work has value and is worthy of compensation.

And that's where you come in.

Your pledges go towards maintaining fishnet, podcast hosting fees, recording equipment, and compensating me for my writing.

A bit more about me:

I'm a queer black woman with a visual disability. I have a BA in Communications with a concentration in Television and Cinema. I also have an MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. I was Bitch Media's Pop-Culture Criticism fellow of 2018. Along with my criticism and podcasting, I also write plays, screenplays and have some TV pilots I would love to become shows someday. I'm a feminist, socialist and passionate about social change. As a disabled black woman from a working-class background, it means the world to me to know that there are people who appreciate my work and find it worthwhile.

Thank you so very much.

I would really love to be able to make a reasonable amount of money for my word count and gain some stability as a freelancer.
