Occasionally my writings will appear in mainstream media outlets, although that format isn't especially well-suited for me, as they tend to only publish "101"-level LGBTQ+ and social justice pieces, whereas I prefer sinking my teeth into "201" and "301"-level topics. Also, I like to write more lengthy, thoughtful, and nuanced pieces, whereas Internet-driven media is more geared towards quick responses and cut-and-dried opinions.On top of all this, we are now in the midst of a growing anti-trans moral panic. Mainstream media outlets have largely fallen asleep at the wheel, or worse, helped to promote trans-skeptical talking points. I’ve spent much of the last eight years countering this anti-trans propaganda and disinformation via thoroughly researched and referenced essays (examples below), and have made them all free and accessible online for trans people and allies to share with others.So if you appreciate the work that I do, I am hoping that you'll support me by becoming a patron! I am not especially prolific: rather than write up my immediate reactions to personal and/or current events, I like to sit with my thoughts for a while, and try to figure out what is being overlooked, or what could be said better or framed differently. But I am now committed to releasing a series of video essays and explainers, the first being <a href="https://youtu.be/ZymYiwoRoC0" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Trans People and Biological Sex: What the Science Says</a>. I also plan to do readings of some of my previous and future essays as well. I know that many people prefer to consume their information by video, so hopefully even more people will be exposed to my work this way.Fiction: I sometimes write silly, surreal, sex-positive fiction under the pen name, or centered on the character of, <a href="http://katcataclysm.com" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Kat Cataclysm</a>. My debut novel – <a href="https://juliaserano.com/99erics.html" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">99 Erics: a Kat Cataclysm faux novel</a> – came out in 2020 and won several awards (you can learn more via the link)! I've also written numerous short stories collected in <a href="https://www.juliaserano.com/katcataclysm/index.html#generalsurgery" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">General Surgery &amp; Surgeons General: a Kat Cataclysm chapbook</a>. Anyway, I will occasionally share some of this work here.Music: I sometimes write and perform music, originally with my previous band <a href="https://www.bitesize.net/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bitesize</a> and currently in my solo lo-fi project <a href="https://softvowelsounds.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">soft vowel sounds</a>. Both are in the noise-pop/indie-rock genres, full of dissonant guitar noises, catchy-as-hell melodies, and quirky lyrics.
