I am Justin Grounds, a violinist, composer, songwriter and electronic music producer living in West Cork, Ireland. After studying baroque violin and electroacoustic composition, I embarked on a musical journey across the globe, and between 2007 and 2012 released 4 solo records; Francesco, Love is Strong as Death, The Dissolving and The Moon Pulled Us Here. Solo got somewhat lonesome though, and yearning for collaboration, I made the 2013 record Idiot Songs with singer Pearse McGloughlin. I then began to delve into a world of shared projects with other artists; musicians, film-makers, dancers and groups of young musicians in my community! I am currently creating music with groups Idiot Songs, The Vespertine Quintet, Farewell JR, Fir Beag, Barefoot Baroque, dancer Inma Pavon, singer Camilla Griehsel, and many others.

As a freelance musician I have contributed my playing, my compositions, my electronic patches and skills, and even my mystical ideas to many different spheres of work - from teaching, to leading creativity seminars, to arranging strings for records and performances, a TEDx talk on creating a Human Orchestra, and even composing music with older folk living in hospital settings. The diversity of this work is invigorating, and always seems to connect me to my community and spark musical connections within that.

WHY PATREON?
Over the years I have worked in various ways with the more traditional channels of the music industry, licensing recordings to labels and working with management and PR. Since the label I was on in Australia went bust, I have been releasing records on my own, gathering resources ahead of each album to record, produce and tour.  I have been travelling with my violin, laptop and suitcase full of records, playing my solo shows far and wide. In the last few years however, my ideas of creating have grown and changed beyond simply making albums. I have been composing music for larger ensembles, string orchestras, choirs, and even the beginnings of a large scale operatic work for community music groups to engage with. I have been writing for bigger than the limits of just what I could play with my violin and loop pedals, and dreaming of making these works actually happen to become performances and recordings and films that my wider community can enjoy, and hopefully engage with deeply.

Because these projects involve more people, the costs involved are higher -  recording, mixing, editing, and the costs of bringing performances to live audiences, as well as via youtube and Facebook live. The costs of recording and performing chamber music is often more than my own pocketbook allows, so it is often the case that I compose works and dream up projects which then sit silent in my notebooks due to the lack of resources to make them happen.

Having a community of patrons to engage with on these projects will not only provide the finances to bring them to life, but also the ideas and conversation that I love and need to help the work engage, evolve and be meaningful to the entire community.  The creation and experience of music and art should never be confined the edges of society, (the 'professional classes') but should be something in the centre of a community, engaging everybody and helping create positive connection and meaning - so let's get going!

HOW IT WORKS

By joining my community of patrons, you can choose to pledge a dollar amount for every 'thing' I create (be it a composition, collaboration or performance). Rather than a 'monthly' subscription (like Netflix or Spotify), you will only pay when I am offering something to engage with. And don't worry - you can cap your monthly spend as well (just in case I get hyper-creative one month!), change your subscription, or quit at any time - just log in and make the changes or cancel.

In exchange you will have access to the JG community feed, where you will be the first people I contact to let you know about new projects, ideas, concerts, videos and scores. There are also higher levels of support which will allow you access to mp3 downloads, pages from my notebook, sheet music scores, backstage and recording session videos and live video streams during rehearsals and sessions including the chance to ask questions, give ideas and interact with the project and artists.

BE PART OF THE CREATING
If, like myself, you value being a part of the creating process as much as hearing the final music, and you're fascinated by the way music is created, and evolves - then hop on board! By becoming my patron you will become co-creators in the whole thing. And if, like myself, you wish you could interact more with artists, unlike the traditional model of waiting years between new records with no insights....then lets change the model! Having your support means that new music can be realized and released whenever the inspiration and ideas come together!

THANK YOU! I am really excited about exploring Patreon as a new platform for releasing my music and embarking on a series of exciting musical projects with you - more than anything I'm excited about getting your ideas, passions, insights and input as we produce music together. Come and join my orchestra! Dance along with us! Be a part of some amazing new music.
