Kaja Sadowski is creating martial arts community

Hello! I'm Kaja, a martial arts and self defense instructor in Vancouver, Canada. I co-own and run Valkyrie Western Martial Arts Assembly, and have been teaching physical skills for over a decade. I write about teaching and community on my blog, Kajaswords, and am working on a few larger projects to give my fellow instructors better resources for building healthy, fun, and challenging training environments.

I've always been passionate about supporting beginners and minorities in the arts I practice, and my mission is to make martial arts and self defense more accessible to women and members of the LGBT community. My specialties are helping students get way outside their comfort zones, and building spaces that foster diversity and growth without taking the fun out of fighting.

What am I doing on Patreon?

I want to do more for my community and to reach people outside of our immediate circle at Valkyrie WMAA. Our school is a laboratory — a messy, experimental space where we test-run innovative teaching and community-building methods, and push ourselves and our students to be the best possible versions of themselves — and I want to share our most exciting findings with you.

Patreon gives me a platform from which to launch wide-reaching projects like books and videos. It's a place where I can build a community of people like you who will have a real impact on what I do next. I want to hear what you're struggling with in your training and teaching. What you're excited about. What you wish there was more of in your school, club, or local scene. I want to share ideas and solutions with you, and see what happens when you plant those seeds and help them grow.

I'm a collaborator at heart, and I work best when I'm in dialogue with a community and an audience that gives a damn about the world they're building and the work they're doing. I'd like to make a home for that community here, and I want you to join me.

What am I making right now?

My current projects include:

  • A non-fiction book for instructors. Working title: Fear is the Mind Killer: how to build a training culture that fosters strength and resilience (estimated publication: May 2019)

  • A companion video series of system-agnostic drills and games for the classroom. They're designed to build good partnering skills, overcome common student stumbling blocks, and integrate chaos and play safely into a more structured environment (estimated release: Spring/Summer 2019)
