About Kaja Sadowski

Hello! I'm Kaja, a martial arts and self defense instructor in Vancouver, Canada. I co-own and run Valkyrie Western Martial Arts Assembly, and have been teaching physical skills for over a decade. I write about teaching and community on my blog, Kajaswords, and am committed to giving my fellow instructors better resources for building healthy, fun, and challenging training environments; and to helping students of all martial arts find the communities that support them.

I've always been passionate about supporting beginners and minorities in the arts I practice, and my mission is to make martial arts and self defense more accessible to women and members of the LGBTQ+ community. My specialties are helping students get way outside their comfort zones, and building spaces that foster diversity and growth without taking the fun out of fighting.

What am I doing on Patreon?

I want to do more for my community and to reach people outside of our immediate circle at Valkyrie WMAA. Our school is a laboratory — a messy, experimental space where we test-run innovative teaching and community-building methods, and push ourselves and our students to be the best possible versions of themselves — and I want to share our most exciting findings with you.

Patreon gives me a platform from which to launch wide-reaching projects like books and videos. It's a place where I can build a community of people like you who will have a real impact on what I do next. I want to hear what you're struggling with in your training and teaching. What you're excited about. What you wish there was more of in your school, club, or local scene. I want to share ideas and solutions with you, and see what happens when you plant those seeds and help them grow.

I'm a collaborator at heart, and I work best when I'm in dialogue with a community and an audience that gives a damn about the world they're building and the work they're doing. I'd like to make a home for that community here, and I want you to join me.

What am I making?

Projects completed with the aid my Patrons:

Current projects:

  • A companion video series of system-agnostic drills and games for the classroom. They're designed to build good partnering skills, overcome common student stumbling blocks, and integrate chaos and play safely into a more structured environment (estimated release: 2020)
  • A new non-fiction book, The Little Green Book of Not Getting Stabbed, a modern interpretation of the unarmed defenses against a dagger attack described in Achille Marozzo's 1568 martial arts treatise (estimated release: 2021)
  • The KS Vlog, an ongoing, informal video series that tackles issues of pedagogy and training, aimed at both students and instructors (ongoing)
  • The Kajaswords research community, an outreach project to provide support to students and instructors doing independent research via weekly video chats and a dedicated Discord server (ongoing)
