About Kaja Sadowski

Hello! I'm Kaja, a swordplay and self defense instructor in Vancouver, Canada. I co-own and run Valkyrie Western Martial Arts Assembly, and have been teaching physical skills and practicing martial arts for over a decade. I am committed to giving my fellow instructors better resources for building healthy, fun, and challenging training environments; and to helping students of all martial arts find the communities and training practices that support them.

I've always been passionate about supporting beginners and minorities in the arts I practice, and my mission is to make martial arts and self defense more accessible to women and members of the LGBTQ+ community. My specialties are helping students get way outside their comfort zones, dealing with stress and adrenaline safely and effectively, and building spaces that foster diversity and growth without taking the fun out of fighting. I'm also a big history and culture nerd.

What am I doing on Patreon?

Patreon started as a place where I could share in-progress projects with people who were invested in my work. Over the last few years, it's shifted into a collaborative community space where I openly discuss my ideas and processes with patrons from around the globe, and where they have just as much opportunity to contribute and workshop their own thoughts.

The core of my activities here is a weekly live video chat over Zoom. Every Saturday, starting at 1pm Pacific Time, I sign on and talk about my current training and teaching ideas, recent events, challenges I'm facing or problems I'm wrestling with, or questions that have come up over the course of the past week. These conversations are highly interactive, and it's not unusual for a single question to send us off on a big tangent or for the attendees to entirely steer the direction of the talk. These sessions are recorded and uploaded here after the fact, so that anyone who can't be there live still gets the benefits.

We also have a growing Discord community with channels for individual projects — some my own, and some those of other community members — where folks can share what they're working on and get peer feedback. It's also got venues for more general discussions around training, community, general nerd stuff, and the all-important pet photo channel.

I'm continuing to share behind-the-scenes snippets of my work, but there's so much more happening now. I want this to be a space for all of us, and not just a one-way channel for me to tell you what I'm doing.

What am I making?

Projects completed with the aid my Patrons:

  • A non-fiction book for instructors: Fear is the Mind Killer: How to Build a Training Culture that Fosters Strength and Resilience (now available in paperback and ebook)
  • The KS Vlog, an informal video series that tackled issues of pedagogy and training for both students and instructors; the precursor to our current live chats (watch all 8 videos)

Current projects:

  • a pre-recorded, online course on workshop design and delivery for martial arts teachers
  • a multi-book interpretation project that covers my approach to reading and teaching historical martial arts texts, and will help readers do the same! Planned volumes include:
    • The Little Green Book of Not Getting Stabbed, a modern interpretation of the unarmed defenses against a dagger attack described in Achille Marozzo's 1568 martial arts treatise
    • Two Swords: Two Furious, a modern interpretation of the two swords material from Domingo Luis Godinho's 1599 martial arts treatise
  • a long-term, research and experience-based writing project on adrenaline management in the classroom

Join me! I'd love to have you as a part of my growing community of martial artists, researchers, and teachers.
