About

I fell in love with fantasy watching Star Wars. At eight years old, I remember seeing a lightsaber for the first time, and thinking it was easily the coolest weapon in existence. Back then, I had been watching Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles, and other 90's kids' shows long enough that I loved seeing characters who looked like me, but it wasn't a prerequisite for whether or not I enjoyed a show. Luke Skywalker didn't bother me. He wasn't my favorite (that would be Chewbacca), but I rooted for him when he fought "the man with Mufasa's voice". I didn't know it at the time, of course, but the limited representation of minorities in this, and other sci-fi/fantasy series', would become an issue that impacted me as a writer more than almost anything else. I noticed similar trends in the novels I read, especially noting that people of color tend to be supporting characters.
In my own fantasy writing, I seek constantly to include a diverse cast that supports a strong minority protagonist. It's important for me to avoid the box black authors so often find ourselves in. Too often, stories by black authors are full of black characters with one or two white folks sprinkled in to represent the same "diversity" of the stories with "the token black guy". I'd like your help to do that. Supporting me means you support stories that celebrate differences while revealing similarities. I will do everything in my power to bring you those stories. I draw heavily on real world experiences and events, so I try my best to stay informed. In doing so, I often share that information, and encourage rational discussion. I'm doing my best to help my biracial children grow up in a world where they can celebrate all parts of themselves. Thank you for your support!
