About Karie Westermann
Hey, I'm Karie Westermann. Nice to meet you!
I live in Glasgow, Scotland but am originally from Denmark, a small Scandinavian country.
I usually describe my day job as ‘doing things with wool and words’. I am a knitwear designer, teacher and writing.
My Patreon will serve as a space where I get to explore making, creativity, and (yes) handknitting in long-form writing. Topics will range widely from musings on the everyday wardrobe to how we explore our own identities in our making and creative travelogues. The focus will be personal, but with much more scope than a blog post. I have kept a blog since 2001 but have increasingly felt frustrated by the format as well as wanting to form more of a personal connection with my readers.
If you enjoy my writing — including the essays I have written for both my Doggerland: Knits From A Lost Landscape and This Thing of Paper — I hope that you will support this Patreon. Your support means that not only will I have a space to explore my writing further but also give us a chance to have thoughtful conversations beyond a blog post or social media comment.
With all the love,
Karie

It is such a privilege to be a small part of other people’s making lives: every time I see someone excited about a new technique or wearing one of my designs, I feel so honoured. My work combines my twin loves of storytelling and craft. I am a big believer in textiles being more than just something that keeps us warm. I am passionate about Knit Local, slow fashion, and the making of an everyday wardrobe. In 2017 I published my first book, This Thing of Paper, inspired by the invention of the printing press, the handmade movement, and how we relate to things through our bodies.
