About

Hi, I am a medical sociologist, science studies scholar, activist, and a mad scientist minded apocalypsologist. I write stories that matter, regardless of how bad they hurt. I am livestreaming history. No, not as a disaster tourist, but someone with the cursed tendency to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I am obsessed with ruin, which is why I like Arata Izosaki's work and NieR Automata. I am permanently flabbergasted about the normalized absurdity (or the absurd normalcy) that goes under the name 'the atomic age'. My focus is nuclear, social stigma, and there where the politics of normalcy and health are in play. I am slowly translating my Netherlands-published book (2019) 'In verwarde staat' into an English work (currently talking with an interested British publisher). This book is dealing with the politics of normalcy and a present-day actualization of Hannah Arendt's work on the way the western world deals with the madness it stigmatizes.

For 2020, I scheduled a book project discussing the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the social stigma suffered by hibakusha. I imagine it to be in the form of a nuclear novel. But then a present apocalypse (the pandemic) caught my attention and I am currently busy with writing history in real-time (see my #RecordingHistory blog on www.karlijnroex.net). I am planning to write a manuscript in English on the interplay between (medical) science and politics, at the background of fear for contamination and the tendency to scapegoat already stigmatized groups for being contagious.

Yet, the nuclear novel is still scheduled, occasionally I already write down ideas and insights, review some literature, chat with some ppl. It is too important to forget, given the higher age of the last A-bomb survivors, those few who have witnessed the climax of the atomic age and therefore fully realize its catastrophic implications.
