Why me?
Hi! I'm Karolina Szczur, an experienced developer, and designer with a passion for community and inclusion. I've been speaking and running events for a few years now—chances are you've attended a conference I curated or advised for (JSConf EuropeJSConf AustraliaCSSConf AustraliaRealtimeConf and more).

As a Community Organiser, I actively challenged not only the format and quality of these events but even more so, diversity and inclusion. Some have become an industry standard baseline for many curators worldwide, which I’m incredibly proud of.

You might have seen me speak on  Building Inclusive Communities, writing about  Programming Inclusion being a woman in tech or  making Github postpone their conference because it wasn't diverse enough

For more information head to my website or  Twitter.

Why Patreon?
Diversity and inclusion activism is very challenging and can be emotionally draining. In a few ways, I've sacrificed my career progression in engineering and product in favour of trying to progress the community through organizing events, speaking and writing (I wrote about this at length in " Women will never advance doing community work"). Treating D&I as a side project is not only detrimental to my mental and physical health (resulting in working too much) but also doing a disservice to this incredibly important subject, hindering the possible positive impact I might have if given the time and headspace.

I'd like to focus on creating shareable educational resources that will help advance tech communities, organizations and the industry as a whole. I'm not able to bootstrap this on my own. I have a few ideas, and a patron scheme seems to be most fitting rather than a Kickstarter.

The project
This Patreon has a few different goals, depends on the funds I'm able to raise:
  • Goal 1: Each month, I will publish two long-form articles on subjects surrounding diversity and inclusion.
  • Goal 2: I'll publish an actionable list for running inclusive events in tech.
  • Goal 3: I'll write an extensive, online resource on diversity and inclusion in running events.
  • Goal 4: I'll be able to hire editors, illustrators and pay a few contributors to write a foreword and offer professional review for the book.
  • Goal 5 and beyond: I'll organize D&I-oriented events and workshops.

I'm looking forward to making this all reality, and I appreciate your support!
