Hello! I’m HY. I write lesbian fiction and post it on the internet.

My current project is a web serial called Katalepsis, currently updated with new chapters on Saturdays. If you’ve wandered across my patreon page from a point of origin that somehow wasn’t that story, here, have a link. Or a different link, if you prefer to read web serials via Royal Road. I hope you like it!

May Update: speed-writing every single day, my fingers ache (only joking!)

Wow. Between my own site, the Royal Road mirror, and now a Scribblehub mirror as well, over a thousand people are reading Katalepsis every week. I don't know what to say. That's incredible!

Thank you all, patrons, readers, whoever you are. I'm amazed my little story has managed to entertain so many. Regardless of if you're waiting for the next chapter, or you've just started reading, thank you. Thank you so much.

As the story has grown and evolved, so has my writing process. Chapters are now longer and more complex than they were in the beginning.

A couple of weeks ago I put a question to my patrons. The answer was quite clear: rather than pushing to publish chapters more often, I'm going to continue to focus on that complexity and length (and quality, I hope!) - and build a buffer of one or two completed chapters which I can let patrons read early!

As such, I've gone ahead and adjusted the Patreon's goals. This doesn't mean the story will never go to 2 chapters per week, but right now my goal is to reward patrons for their continued support. Early access to at least one chapter ahead is coming very soon!

If you'd like to see that too, please consider donating.

What is Katalepsis about?

Nightmares and hallucinations have plagued Heather Morell all her life.

Diagnosed with schizophrenia as a child after the loss of her twin - a sister who never really existed - now struggling with her mental health at university, Heather teeters on the verge of giving up on life. A chance meeting ends in a revelation: she is not crazy, her visions are all too real, and probably want to eat her soul.

Embroiled with a crippled, bad-tempered magician and her self-proclaimed ‘bodyguard’, Heather rapidly descends into a world of terrifying magic and otherworldly monsters, in an effort to stay sane, bring back the dead, and maybe, just maybe, make out with cool older girls.

Take a dash of cosmic horror, a good helping of urban fantasy, pepper with magic and monsters, violence and tea, sexually confused twenty-somethings and bad curry, wrap the whole lot in a nice crunchy layer of lesbian relationship drama, and mix well in a (very fictional) English university town full of spooky old architecture and run-down terraced housing.

The result, I hope, is a fun story.

Why fund this?

Katalepsis currently updates once weekly, on Saturdays.

Originally, each of these chapters was between 3k-8k words, but as time has gone on chapters have gotten larger and more detailed. Nowdays each chapter is rarely less than 6k, and sometimes more than 8k.

That takes a lot of time!

Sooner or later, depending on the demands of life, this pace will have to slow, despite my desire not to chop the story up into artificially designated chunks.

My first and primary goal with this patreon is to see if Katalepsis is interesting enough that people are willing to support it. If so, perhaps it can become self-sustaining, and from there, the sky is the limit.

As of the time of writing, Katalepsis is planned to comprise three ‘books’, broken down into arcs which are in turn each comprised of about 4-12 chapters each. It will be quite long indeed. If you’re interested in the long-haul, Katalepsis is probably going to be around for a couple of years at least, I hope!

Why do this via patreon? Why not just write a book?

The kinds of stories I’m interested in writing and sharing are incredibly difficult to publish. Not because there’s no audience for them, but because that audience is specialised and diffuse and - that quality most dreaded by traditional publishing - difficult to market at. When’s the last time you saw a lesbian fiction horror epic in a book store? Yeah, thought not.

Many years ago I went looking for the kind of fiction I wanted to read, and I didn’t find much, so now I’m writing it myself. I hope you’ll come along for the ride.

This patreon page is, at the moment, solely dedicated to Katalepsis. If it’s successful, if enough people enjoy my style and characters and want more, then perhaps we can branch out in the not-too-distant future, with input from patrons about which stories to pursue. I have some semi-drafted novels waiting in the wings, all horror-esque lesbian fiction, but for the moment all my creative energies are dedicated to this one story, and I hope you'll come along for the ride.

If this goal is met, I've got even more time to write! Can start to put more time and effort into each chapter, perhaps even start to think about bonus chapters or side material!
