About Kate Heartfield

Welcome to my Patreon! I write science fiction and fantasy, including the Aurora-winning novel Armed in Her Fashion and the Nebula-shortlisted novella Alice Payne Arrives, along with dozens of stories. My interactive fiction projects for Choice of Games, The Road to Canterbury and The Magician’s Workshop, were both shortlisted for the Nebula in game writing. My fiction also been shortlisted for the Locus, Crawford and Sunburst awards, and my journalism for a National Newspaper Award. My next novel is The Embroidered Book, a historical fantasy coming in 2022.

I'm starting this Patreon because, well, writing while parenting, teaching and freelancing to pay the bills during a pandemic is wearing me down. I'd love to carve out more hours to write, and I need your help to do it.

When I started this Patreon in Autumn 2020, my goals were to finish the revisions on The Embroidered Book and to finish drafting my long-backburnered novel.

As of spring 2021, here's what I want to do over the next few years:

  • We're now at the copy-edit stage on The Embroidered Book, a novel about Marie Antoinette and her sister Maria Carolina. It's a novel about women and power and how the Enlightenment got us here.
  • I finished drafting my backburnered novel, and my agent sent feedback, so now I have to revise that one. It is a retelling of an old story through the eyes of its female characters. I love it very much.
  • I'm halfway through drafting a new novella.
  • Write more games.
  • Write more short stories. I've had to stop writing short fiction almost altogether for lack of time and energy.

If you're kind enough to subscribe, thank you. I've decided that I'm more interested in having tiers provide choices so that patrons pay what they can, than in tailoring content according to tier. So every patron will get updates and posts at least once a month on some aspect of the creative life, or on the fascinating rabbit holes I find while doing novel research (history is weird). I'll also try to throw in a bit of fiction each month: a snippet from a work in progress, an unpublished or now-hard-to-find story, or a new micro-story.
