About Kathryn Cramer & Friends

Pandemic Post is a collaboration of four international students studying in OCAD’s Strategic Foresight & Innovation M. Des. program. We are from Mexico (Sebastian Campos-Möller), the United States (Kathryn Cramer), and India (Gulnar Joshi & Aneesha Kotti). The project is based on a pilot project by Kathryn Cramer. (See Portfolio.)

The team will create small, mailable works of art, sending them, via Canada Post, to friends, family, and others, circumventing the constraints of Internet communication.

Art therapy for the creators
Comfort and social engagement for the recipients. We have identified families and those isolating alone as vulnerable stakeholders during pandemic self-isolation; they benefit from receiving a personal gift in the mail.
Creating an artistic record of the pandemic experience
Social innovations in lockdown communications that may have applications in the future.

Developing an expressive language for the circumstance of self-isolation.
Extending the subversive and connective tactics of traditional mail art through 21st-century technologies
Exploring the possibilities of mailable 3D gifts through both package design technologies and 3D printing
Creating attractive and desirable face-masks that can be mailed as gifts.

Statement of Need:
The Covid-19 crisis is global and involves complex and large-scale economic crashes and disruption. OCAD’s international students are among the most vulnerable members of the OCAD community because of disruptions in the flows of money across borders, fluctuations of exchange rates, and the loss of opportunities to earn money locally. Three out of four team members are impacted by these disruptions.
Cost of materials and equipment.
