About Kathryn Cramer

Welcome to Family Farm to Food Forest!

Hi! I'm Kathryn Cramer.

I am a writer & editor and have had a career in the science fiction field. My most recent major project was an anthology, Hieroglyph: Stories & Visions for a Better Future (HarperCollins, 2014). I am also an occasional orchardist.

I am reinventing our family farm, Domaine Champlain Orchards, in Westport, New York on seven acres between the Adirondack Mountains & Lake Champlain. And I would like to share this journey with you. This will certainly be my Master's Project and it might end up as one or more books.

In December of 2009, we bought the orchard, which involved about 250 apple trees. "We" were me (Kathryn Cramer), my parents John & Pauline Cramer, a physicist and a retired engineer respectively, and my husband, David Hartwell (a science fiction editor who has since died).

The orchard was planted by the Gibbs family in around 1985 and initially had about 600 trees. of the trees they planted we still have eleven varieties. In order of ripening, they are Jersey Mac, Paula Red, Jonamac, Macoun, Red Courtland, R. R. Mac, Macspur, Honey Gold, Gala, Empire, and Northern Spy. My favorites are the Paula Reds, The Red Courts, & the Northern Spy. In addition, a few years ago, I planted five cider varieties that are not yet producing. About five years ago, we started getting farm animals and currently have American Guinea Hogs, chickens, ducks, and one remaining turkey.

I am currently a graduate student at OCAD University in the Strategic Foresight & Innovation Master of Design program. Family Farm to Food Forest is my Major Research Project towards my degree.

I would like to have ten patrons so that I can feel as though I have a small but constant audience for the work on my project.
