About

What's this about?

Patreon is a cool place where people who love what I do can support my writing by making a monthly pledge.
patron: a person who supports with money, gifts, endorsement, charity: a patron of the arts
If you'd like to support me in my endeavors to write more fun adventures, your monthly pledge would be super helpful and deeply appreciated! Those who pledge $5 or more get special perks. "VIP" patrons get sneak peeks at upcoming stories!

As a patron, you can pledge as little as a buck or as much as a million bucks. (I'm willing to bet that if you pledge $1m per month, either your name is Bezos or you used to be married to someone named Bezos!) Kidding aside, just $1 per patron adds up! Choose the $3 "Emerging Patron" level and set the amount to $1 or whatever you'd like. Or choose one of the other membership levels if the perks appeal to you!

You're charged automatically by the Patreon site
  • when you pledge, and
  • at the beginning of every month.

Cancel anytime or change your pledge amount and/or membership level whenever it suits you.

What do you do?

I write fantastical stories! My fantasy work tends toward "sword and sorcery" with sword-swinging fighters, magic-casting mages, and ordinary people who must rise to meet their challenges at great personal cost. My stories are often described as "unique" and "compelling" because I write what I like to read—stories about flawed people doing heroic things for the greater good.

Gavin Kinshield, the hero of the Kinshield Saga, is crude, illiterate, and leaves broken promises in his wake, but he's the most popular character I've ever written. Jora Lanseri is literally battling a demon inside her, which sometimes makes doing The Right Thing especially challenging. Bioengineered Ryder Stone is a loving, complex, and bitter man who must weigh saving humanity against his own instinct for survival.

What do you use the money for?

To pay bills, nothing fancy or exciting. There are also editing and cover art costs to consider as a book nears completion.

OK, but who are you?

I'm Karen, writing fantasy and science fiction as K.C. May. I also write romance as Alane Hudson. At present, I'm a full-time novelist, but I also take writing, editing, and programming gigs to help pay the bills.

Karen & Hombre (RIP)
Both my parents were big into reading. Well into her 80s, my mom devours novels. We have a deep love of story in common. When my dad was around, he mostly read non-fiction. We had that in common too—the love of learning. But I've known I wanted to be a writer since I was about twelve.

Like any kid, I didn't know where to start, and so I just wrote little stories for the fun of it, mostly about horses. In college, I took creative writing classes. Then came the Writer's Digest courses through the mail to get one-on-one guidance from a Real Published Author, like the venerable Elizabeth Ann Scarborough. (She mentored me the year she won the Nebula award for her novel The Healer's War!) When the internet became a thing, I joined critique forums online.

Once I finished my first novel, I made it part of a trilogy. After that, I wrote a new novel—three times. From scratch. It got revised at least half a gazillion times. I loved the story so much, I wanted to be sure I was doing it justice. I applied and was admitted to the esteemed Viable Paradise writing workshop in beautiful Martha's Vineyard, where I received focused help from such giants in the SFF field as Steven Gould, Teresa Nielsen Hayden, Patrick Nielsen Hayden, Debra Doyle, and James D. Macdonald. In fact, I'll never forget what Macdonald told me as we students were saying our goodbyes at the end of the week-long workshop. He gripped my hand, looked deep into my eyes, and said, "You can write. Don't ever stop."

The same year, the novel I'd worked so hard on, The Kinshield Legacy, was published—in hard cover! One Amazon top-500 reviewer called it "one of the best First Books by a new author I have been privileged to read and review." Sadly, the publisher didn't sell many copies, but I got the rights back a few years later and put it out in various ebook formats. I couldn't stop there, though. No, siree! I wrote three more books in the series.

Even after publishing, I took more Writer's Digest courses online, where I was mentored by successful authors, like New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Carol Davis Luce. I also take the occasional workshop by greats, like international New York Times bestselling science fiction & fantasy author Dave Wolverton (aka David Farland). I love reaching higher, honing my skills, and becoming better with every book.

I've also written a six-book series, The Mindstream Chronicles, and co-wrote The Dragons of Kudare trilogy with highly acclaimed author India Drummond. I'm currently working on a novella collection and stand-alone fantasy novel set in the Mindstream universe.

You can see a list of all my books at my website: https://www.kcmay.com

Anyway, that's who I am—writer, computer geek, animal lover. I would absolutely love your support!
