WHO AM I?

Hi, my name is Kendall Giles. By training I am an engineer, writer, researcher, and teacher. I believe that, now more than ever, it is important for society to better understand the technologies we are embedding into our environment, homes, and even bodies. It is important to understand not just how to use the technologies, but also the implications and risks of the technologies we design, implement, and release into the universe. What future world do we want to live in? Will the technologies we are building now help us ever achieve that future? If not, with the technologies we build and purchase, what kind of future are we actually creating? These are some of the motivating questions behind my writings and work in exploring the intersection of technology and society.

WHY PATREON

I love to teach and create. For years I've explored ways to write articles and stories, create videos, and create audio to share information with, well, everyone! I'm excited to try Patreon as a way to give me an opportunity to continue engaging and sharing with you. I think Patreon is great because it provides a convenient interface and platform for building a community where I can share the things I create with you. More importantly, it's also a place where we can interact together.

WHAT I CREATE

Because I live and work on the edge of several different worlds: science, technology, society, academia, and writing, topics that I’m actively interested in include technology, history of technology, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, cybersecurity, the internet, engineering, the interaction of technology and society, writing (fiction as well as non-fiction), teaching, higher education, playing guitar...okay, maybe you get the idea. The point is that I think and hope there's something in that list that we have in common.

Right now I'm experimenting with creating (*weekly*?) TechnoSlipstream Curated Links posts. By curated links, I mean that I’ll point you to important or interesting articles, videos, or other items and comment on why those things are worth paying attention to, or how those things relate to everything else that is going on in our crazy world.

I'm also developing a *monthly* deep dive into a current technology topic or concern. Issues with social media--why you might want to delete your social media accounts. The dangers behind Artificial Intelligence and whether or not you are at risk of your job being replaced by a robot. Concerns about security and privacy. These are just some of the deep dives I have planned--there's a lot more to know about our socio-robo-technical society, so stay tuned.

Going forwards, I'd like to return to video. I mean, while I create and use video daily when I'm teaching at my university, I'd like to get back to creating videos to share with everyone--you, my supporters. I used to make regular videos on my YouTube channel. You can see there that most of my videos centered on technology or other product reviews, travel adventures, and maybe some music videos as well. Unfortunately, life obligations pulled me away and I haven't been able to make regular videos. However, if there is enough interest (that's where you can help) I'd love to make more videos for you. Webinars, tutorials, reviews--you name it. I'd also be interested in creating a podcast, but again, that takes energy, resources, and time.

If there's interest from you, though, we can make it happen. Examples and ideas for videos and podcasts include webinars and tutorials on how to use technologies such as Evernote, Python, how to create static websites, how to use Markdown, etc. Interested in something I didn't list? Let me know. I create webinars and tutorials for the classes I teach at the university, so the point is that I'd love to create videos and podcasts especially to share with you, my supporters.

YOUR SUPPORT

Your support helps me justify the time, effort, and resources needed to learn new technologies, try new products, host my website, write, create videos, create audio...all things that go well beyond my day job. Just to give you an example: I've recently taken three graduate university courses, on my own--courses even outside my own discipline--just to help me better understand the technologies, trends, and events in society.

The world (especially technology) changes so quickly--it takes a lot of effort to keep up. But that's what I love doing, and that's where you can help. Your support lets me know you are interested learning about and discussing the important ideas and events of the day. The positive potential in the world for all these new technologies is there, for sure, but there's also a lot of risk involved too, especially because technology seems to advance more quickly than our ability to process and understand it.

My job is to help you bridge that gap. I'd love to have your support so that we can navigate this TechnoSlipstream together. Each day brings a new problem to solve, a new mountain to climb, and a new song to sing. Thank you for any support you are willing to give, and I look forward to sharing the adventure ahead with you!
