The Susquehanna Gift Circle is a community of nearly 2k people in central Pennsylvania. It is a local example of community committed to the gift economy and it challenges dominant thinking about what it means to live together in support of neighbors and local systems.

As members of a shared geographic and physical region, the Susquehanna river valley, we connect via this Facebook group to share resources, offer gifts, express needs, offer services, find help, and otherwise interact in the spirit of giving. [See pinned post in FB group]

This group is more than an exchange of free stuff.
It’s a lesson in respect, empathy, and support.

- Sarah, member of Susquehanna Gift Circle

Kendra Marie Hoffman is the initiator and organizer of the Susquehanna Gift Circle and several other local focus groups. Co-admins, Pamela Parson and Stephen Sands, have dedicated much time and energy to these emergent groups. We believe "we the people" can design our own social and economic systems, by optimizing our resource circulation and building our local relationships.

Local Focus Groups

Susquehanna SkillShare
Learn or share any kind of knowledge, practice, craft, talent, skill...
Susquehanna Garden Share
Share gardening tips, swap seeds, offer land, share harvests, lend helping hands and grow!
Susquehanna GIG Circle
Search and find local labor, skilled workers, freelancers and paid jobs.

It's wonderful to see people stepping up
and doing what they can to help others.
- Tana, member of Susquehanna Gift Circle

Why A Patreon Campaign

Currently, it takes a lot of thoughtful time and energy to manage community needs, moderate member relations, and provide consulting for those in most need. For this to happen sustainably, Kendra needs financial patrons.

Your contribution supports:
+ FREE public access for all locals to the Susquehanna Gift Circle
Continued development of local community systems
+ MORE SkillShares
[See the $20 Patron Tier]
+ Guidance in starting a local gift circle in your area
+ Much more... to emerge :)

Patrons will receive:
Access to patron-only content [as of now, a monthly blog covering topics including gift economy, permaculture, spirituality, food issues, community needs, interesting locals, etc.]
Infinite gratitude and boosted karma, haha
+ Some patrons will be invited to SkillShares and further conversation about what their investments could co-create in our communities [See Patron Tiers]

Hypothetically, a $1/mo contribution from each member of the Susquehanna Gift Circle would create a sustainable monthly stipend for Kendra to continue this work.*

A gift of sponsorship, stability and freedom - $100/mo is a substantial and regular financial commitment. This amount can replace a few hours of income work each month, and make a huge difference in the organizational capacity of The Susquehanna Gift Circle and all the spin-off focus groups.

If enough Organizational Patrons sign on, Kendra will reach out to develop some additional communication or interaction with these supporters.

Community Investor
$1,000 or more per month 0 patrons
This covers your gift circle contribution ($1), covers 999 other members' contributions, and allows Kendra to fully embrace her role as community organizer, consultant and designer in a full time volunteer capacity.

There are endless ways to build here in Harrisburg... consulting small ethical businesses, volunteering for community garden work days, designing websites for farmers, and dozens of other things...

Unfortunately, the most passionate and potentially helpful locals just can't always afford to pay for my time and work. I don't want to create a consulting business at this time, and only serve those who can afford my rates. So I am asking for community investments.

As a Community Investor, you are not only supporting me, and sponsoring hundreds of members to support the gift circle work, but you are directly investing in the lives of real local people doing awesome work, who I really want to help succeed

This is a dedication of faith, charity and love

Thank you for trusting me.

Goals
6 of 10 patrons
When I get 10 supporters, I will ask my patrons what they think of this experience so far. I will then set a new goal, based on their feedback, and reassess the campaign again when that goal is met. I aim to grow my support system organically through personal relationships and gift exchanges.
