I’m Kendriana Washington and my creative intention is as such: to honor my heritage past, preserve Black femme stories of present and manifest beautifully liberated Afro-futures. I apply this objective intentionally to all of my creative work. My work as a writer, artist and speaker centers the themes of culture, race, gender, sexuality, relationships, futurism, spirituality and activism. I use performance, mixed mediums and the internet to create honest and liberating art, media and literature that fosters social, economical, political and personal equity.

I began my career in the creative world in museum programming and as a public relations assistant for galleries, I also produced live performances with local artists in my hometown. I’ve been writing and making art since age three and have a lifetime commitment to my creative vision. I believe that art should connect/grow community and to be an artist is no different than working as a farmer, teacher, leader, doctor, engineer or activist in a creative ecosystem. Creative practice is my purpose and I put forth daily, generous effort to make it my profession.

On September 10th, 2018 I was targeted by individuals who don’t agree with my social justice writing which supports people oppressed on the basis of skin color, ethnic background, gender, ability and orientation. Together they weaponized their mutual disdain for my bold presence online as Queer Black femme, took advantage of the biases in A.I. algorithms and reported the empowering work on my most active platform until my account was deleted without warning. Thousands of hours of labor and nearly 10 years of intellectual and creative content was censored and pilfered in a matter of seconds before my eyes. This Patreon account serves not only as a way to protect my work but also a hub for convenient access and most importantly, a means to support and sustain my professional endeavors and upcoming projects.

As a patron you will not only be contributing equitably to my creative work but you will also be a part of undoing a systemic glass ceiling which has often forced Black femmes to dismiss and discard their passion and talent as an act of survival in a society that does not seek to benefit us. Aside from extensive projects, printed/commissioned pieces and fine art, most of my work across all platforms is unpaid/free of cost, your support will help me maintain that accessibility. It will also help to improve the quality of my content and supplement production. As I build more sustainable sources of creative income, I'll be able to share more free public work.

Current projects include continued blogging and creative content across all platforms, an interview video series, zines in digital/print, a digital literary club, art-tech message board and solo art show.

Progress since joining Patreon fall 2018:
- 16 people from marginalized groups have been hired to do creative work
- The Capitalism project/podcast The American Caste Conversations has been completed
- The Love Letters to Black Girls short film has been completed
- Monthly long-form writing and researched editorials on Kendrianaspeaks.com
- Daily exclusive content, writing, and curatorial work in arts and culture on Patreon

- Sign-ups have begun for the art-tech message board Melanin on Digital
- Development is in progress for the quarterly literature club Rad Black Lit
- On Instagram: Curated arts, culture and commentary in stories; journalistic live interviews and collaborative chats; short-form socio-political microblogging; the Black Planet eco-futurist series
- Planning has started for the Black Business Gift Guide project
- Planning has started for season two of the Kendriana Speaks podcast
- Writing and editing for the afro-futurist zine is in progress

Patrons will have access to details on prior, current and upcoming projects plus exclusive short story journal entries, monthly live chats, book club membership benefits and quarterly appreciation packages. The art/lit world can be incredibility political, classist and lacking in diversity, I appreciate your support in this journey of me taking ownership of my future as a Black femme creative.

There's still so much to be done.

Thank you,

Goals
428 of 650 patrons
When this goal is achieved I will begin the production and release of my Afrofuturist zine. Since it's inception, the sci-fi futurist space has failed to meet the needs of the Pan-African community. The film, art and literature world has made it clear that they can't conceptualize a future in which Black people can thrive without White integration or saviorism. Gatekeepers in creative spaces deny Afro-futurist projects because they believe that Black people cannot see themselves in the future, this is a lie shaped by the White Supremacist idea that the life force of the Pan-African diaspora should have no future.

I first began making zines over 10 years ago and this project will be my third zine release and offering to the Pan-African community that desires empowering interpretations of Black utopias.

This will:
  • Allow me to release the zine digitally to all at no cost
  • Help me to print a limited number of copies to be made available at independent book stores and creative events
