Hello there dear reader,

Tired of the confusing and conflicting information about health, nutrition, longevity? Want to understand not just what, but also why?

My name is Kevin Bass. I have two bachelor's degrees: one in cultural anthropology and another in neurobiology. I have a Master's degree in immunology. I am a presently an MD/PhD student working in the area of aging, cellular bioenergetics, and neurodegeneration. If you wanted me to name my broad specialization, I would say I am training to become a biochemist and cell biologist. I have completed my first two years of my MD and my first two years of my PhD.

I've got a ways. By the time I am done with school, I will be ancient.

I have also been through my school of hard knocks (health-wise at least!) and tried virtually every popular diet known to popular media, and possibly to man. I was once a 6'1", 200-pound, 10% body fat bodybuilder, and a huge believer in low-carbohydrate, Paleolithic-style diets. Before that, I was obese. (Most of the people in the family in which I was born are obese; all have metabolic disease and the medical histories that accompany it.)

Today, I am lighter (170-180), a casual cyclist, a slightly more serious calisthenics enthusiast, and with a growing interest in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I am an advocate of a whole foods, mostly plant-based diet.

(Phew!)

Many things have worked for me in maintaining and improving my health. Many have failed. Some have failed only to work later. Some have worked only to fail later. Because of this, and because of the passion with which I have held many beliefs that I have later discovered to be false, I am skeptical of my own personal experience and convictions.

So, when I have a question, I take it to the ultimate arbiter, the final judge, jury, and executioner (dun-dun-DUNNN): the scientific literature.

That passion for communicating science it is what I can offer to you, my dear reader. ...

Why did I choose this route? My story is a complicated, challenging, and dare I say, interesting one. But it will have to be told right. And it will have to wait for its own, long post.

But I have one goal: to make a contribution to science and my society. What I cannot achieve in my lifetime, I hope to lay some of the foundation for when I am gone. I consider myself as participating in one large, grand story of much greater significance than my own individual and <cue growly, haughty bad guy voice> essentially meaningless being. Mwahahaha.

My life's significance I consider to derive from my participation in this much larger story.

Science and the growth of human knowledge, in my estimation, is central to this fundamentally religious-like story that gives meaning to my life.

Yet, I have a wife and two children, and I need to support these. That is why I am writing here. To support my and their existences. While doing what I am deeply passionate for. And I hope that this, my dear reader, will be of some benefit to you.

For you are a part of that society to which I hope to offer benefit through science.

See how that works?
