About

Hi! I’m Allie Marini, and I’m a cross-genre writer and tarot reader. I’m a Florida expat who writes poetry, fiction, essays, and tarot dossiers. I will never be done writing about Florida, and I’ll never stop missing it.

I hold degrees from Antioch University of Los Angeles and New College of Florida. I’m also a member of the Tarosophy Tarot Association and an empathic tarot reader, with over 25 years of experience reading cards, though I’ve only recently made the jump to doing this professionally.

Like many working writers, I’ve been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, and I’ve also been a finalist for Best of the Net and the Science Fiction Poetry Society’s Elgin Award. I’ve been part of the mastheads for many literary magazines, including Lunch Ticket, Spry Literary Journal & Mojave River Review.

I’ve published several chapbooks through small presses, including Pictures from the Center of The Universe (Paper Nautilus, winner of the Vella Prize) Southern Cryptozoology: A Field Guide to Beasts of the Southern Wild (Hyacinth Girl Press, finalist for the SFPA’s Elgin Award), and my most recent collection, This Apiary (Glass Poetry Press.) In addition to my published work, I was also a member of Oakland’s 2017 National Slam Team.

Now, you probably know that all that stuff up there doesn’t really matter much. Those are all just arbitrary markers that validate me as a capital-A “Author.”

So, what am I doing here? Glad you asked!

I’m appreciative of all the love & unpaid labor that goes into small presses. But I’m tired of so much of small literary press being tied to your Lit Twitter clout or who your followers are. I’ve struggled for a long time to figure out where my work “fits” & have come to this conclusion: it doesn’t. That means it’s time to go my own way.

I’m ready to create work based in divinatory poetics, the intersection between art, magic & the occult. Instead of struggling to separate my spiritual practices from my writing, I want to bring them together in a way that is more than just a passing allusion, signaling to other magic practitioners. I want to create a path where before there was none.

These are my goals:

  • a self-produced tarot deck
  • independent publication of some of my manuscripts using ISBNS from my long-abandoned micropress
  • the creation of a hybrid work that brings together tarot spreads and other divinatory poetic practices with concrete writing prompts
  • whatever else the Wheel of Fortune brings my way

I am re-ordering the tiers to include many things that I’m doing anyway, and you can choose to contribute or not. This means that if you’re already someone I write letters to, you don’t need to become a Patron, it’s ok. This is honestly just something I’m trying to do to keep myself accountable to my goals. I will create entries that talk about my creative process, my tarot and divinatory practices, what I’m reading, etc. I’ll also include content that’s cross-posted other places, like Goodreads and my website, for books I’m reading and deck reviews. Mostly the new tiers are for things that constitute new labor, like 1 and 3-card draws, tarot spreads I create for my grimoire, and other things I conjure up.

For Patrons at different tiers, I'll be creating & sharing:

  • poetry (drafts, reprints, & new work)
  • stories and essays (in-progress, reprints, & new work)
  • Writing prompts
  • 1-card & 3-card tarot or oracle card readings
  • Bibliomancy writing prompts
  • Using dice, runes, & pendulums to create writing prompts
  • tarot spreads
  • tarot spreads + writing prompts
  • customized tarot dossiers
  • letters & postcards
  • whatever content you're interested in -- tell me what you want to see here!
