About Kieryn Darkwater
WHO(MST) IS KIERYN AND WHERE DID THEY COME FROM?
Kieryn was homeschooled in the 90's-00's and grew up in a cult and cult-like environments. The reality of being the eldest daughter in a large conservative quiverfull family meant there wasn't much (if any) time for having in-person friends. So they started blogging in 2005, and met other homeschoolers with similar backgrounds. When they escaped in 2009 they continued writing and documenting their evolution first of adapting to married life, then coming out as bi, leaving christianity, and abandoning the gender binary.
From 2017 - 2019 Kieryn was a full time student at Laney College grappling with the impact of educational neglect, learning disabilities, and navigating school with...a structure? Sometimes when they weren't buried in homework they wrote about it (and everything else) at Bridging the Gap. While on campus, Kieryn organized for institutional LGBTQIA support with the Lavender Project and with the Social Justice Center to help undocumented students at Laney.
Currently, Kieryn is volunteering as the Director of Operations with the Coalition for Responsible Home Education, organizing for housing in the bay area with East Bay for Everyone, deconstructing their christofascist upbringing and the impact that's had on the country on the Kitchen Table Cult Podcast, and rallying their apartment neighbors into forming a Tenants Union while trying to address debilitating chronic health complications.
If they aren't organizing something (check their pulse) then they're making art, playing Destiny2 (or The Sims4), or wondering Lake Merritt at Pupper O'Clock.
WHAT IS THIS PAGE FOR?
So here's the thing about being a disabled community organizer: the work doesn't actually pay the bills.
In theory there's some sweet sweet Soros cash on the way to line the pockets of every left wing activist but until that shows up in the mail, DIY socialism is where it's at. Your support helps Kieryn stay fed, housed, bills paid, in school, and on the ground organizing and making art.
What do you get from it?
Mostly warm fuzzies of knowing that you're keeping an ex-fundamentalist homeschooled kid right the wrongs they were taught to uphold.
Your support enables the creation of educational materials in the form of a lot of writing, podcasts, comics, and eventually maybe books, about what the vast rightwing conspiracy really is about and how to fight it, how to identify and leave cultish groups, and what overcoming C-PTSD from their childhood looks like.
You'll also get Kieryn's undying love, gratitude, and occasional (intensely sporadic) behind the scenes updates (rambles) and full-size comic downloads.
The long and short of it is, moving to new housing that isn't bad for a person's health in the middle of a pandemic is really expensive (landlords >.<). This will fill the gap to cover rent for the new home and the back-rent from the pandemic with some room to breathe without sacrificing things like eating every day.
