"Kij Johnson has an unrivalled gift for making the unreal real and the real  unreal."  — Ursula K. Le Guin
That review of my work from Le Guin meant a lot to me...which is why I’m here to try and live up to it.

Who am I?
I write short stories and novels. Often they're fantasy or formally experimental (or both), but I also write poetry, science fiction, Weird and even mainstream stories. My work has won the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award (three times), the World Fantasy Award (twice), the Sturgeon Award, and the Crawford Award. I also worked in book publishing, comics, game publishing, and the tech industry before settling into teaching creative writing and science fiction/fantasy at the University of Kansas.

As a writer, I try never to do the same thing twice, though I come back to certain topics or themes again and again: animals, gender. I also love new voices and strange perspectives. My influences run deep. I had the pleasure of studying under Ursula K. Le Guin at Clarion in 1987 and again in 2002, and she left a lasting impression on me. You can read more about that experience here. I’m also proud to have worked closely with James Gunn, founder of the Gunn Center for the Study of Science Fiction.

Why am I here?
Two things: I want to write more, especially novels and other long works of fiction. And I want to have a conversation with you here, on this page.

There’s a common misconception about authors who have published multiple works or won awards. Writing does not pay well, alas. Sometimes it never pays well. That’s why I have a day job. I teach creative writing at a major university, which sounds amazing (and it is), but what it doesn't do is give me time for what I consider my real work, writing. I read and comment on more than a million words of student fiction per year, which drains my creative well. And since I'm not paid in the summers, I take other jobs to get through.

Money is especially challenging for me right now, as I will be making $15,000 less in 2018 than I did in 2017.

But with your help, I can make my writing a priority. Your support does some amazing things. It allows me to:

  • Write in the summers, instead of pull together short-term summer jobs.
  • Buy a reduction in my course load, freeing up time for more writing and allowing me to concentrate on longer works.
  • Afford research trips, retreats, and appearances, where I hope to meet more of you in person!
  • Pay for things like new eyeglasses and toner cartridges and laptops and books — the tools of my trade.

Beyond all this, your support shows me that my work matters to people, and not just in the days or months right after something new comes out. It reminds me every day, and that helps me sit down and make art.

There’s another reason I’m here. I want to spend time with you.

Back in the day, I loved my blog, sharing long introspections and short slices of life, status reports and research notes, Norwegian recipes and bouldering problems, memories and dreams. And you shared with me, too, telling me about your own experiences, making connections. For years, hundreds of us were engaged in a many-voiced conversation that touched every topic.

I want us to find that conversation again. So, talk! Share, respond, tell me what you think and feel. And tell other people to join us here. The more we gather, the easier it will be to have the community that we want. My dream is that we create a humming hive of shared topics and experiences, surprises and connections. I know that takes time, but let’s do it! This is a metamorphosis, and we are in it together.

To join our hive, choose any of the subscription options to the right. Every subscription level comes with its own rewards including my unending appreciation. But most important of all your contribution allows me to do what’s most important to me: create art.

  • Each month you are a Beast (or higher tier), you can (if you like) suggest a 250 topic. My usual 250 rules apply: it could end up anywhere, be about anything. It might lead to a longer piece, it might not.

WOWWWWW

It’s incredible to think someone might feel like this about my work. Your donation at this level is an amazing affirmation of what I’ve done thus far and what I want to do in the future.

You have your own reasons for supporting my writing, so the rewards will be everything from other tiers, plus something specific to who you are. In similar situations, I have written a private children’s story, created fiction from prompts, offered betas/drafts of stories, chatted on the phone, shared plans for the future, or visited when I’m in town.

  • Access to any rewards unlocked at our current phase.
