Hana - Second sketch

In this update you see more of the symbolism added to the scene. Hana is sitting in her room. On the floor lies a broken picture frame of her and her parents. Her hands are so burnt, she couldn't hold the frame and let it drop. Although her room should provide a familiar and comfortable environment, she can't escape her past and is reminded of her hopeless situation.

Prototype character boards

This image shows the finished prototype character boards. You can also see some of the other components of the game in the box. Hopefully we will be able to add Josh's nice illustration on these blank areas soon :) Now up to the other components ...

Hana - First sketch

This is the first sketch Joshua send me. It was his suggestion to add a tunnel in the background. It is a tunnel with no light at the end of it, which symbolizes the desperate state Hana is in. On the floor you can see a picture frame of Hana and her parents. Her hands are so burned and painful, she isn't even able to hold the frame in her hands without letting it fall out of her hands.

Creating Hana - The start

This thumbnail illustration shows Joshua's research to create the character Hana. I wanted her to have a desperate look and feel, showing she has nothing left to live for. Based on his research, Joshua proposed three different poses. I guess it is clear which one made it :)

Hana background story

Hana had a bright future to look forward to. She was born in a loving family with parents who loved her full heartedly. While she never lacked a thing, her parents didn’t spoil her. Hana’s parents learned her from the beginning to appreciate even the little things. As a result, Hana developed an appealing character, which made her loved by family and friends. Growing up, she developed great artistic skills. At the age of 11 she won an anime contest, being the youngest contest and winner ever participating. She won a $10,000 dollar price as well as a chance to publish her own anime series. Her parents put the money on a personal bank account to pay for her future education. Hana enthusiastically started working on her anime series. A few months later tragedy blew this bright future away when she and her parents got involved in a tragic car accident. Their car was hit by another driver who drove through a red light. Her father was killed instantly. In shock, Hana saw the car catch fire. While bystanders tried to free Hana and her mother, her mother insisted Hana to be brought to safety first. One bystander was able to pull her out just before the car exploded in big flames. As of today, the big explosion is still burned in her mind while she imagines her mother comforting her, telling her she will be ok. Although Hana survived the explosion, her hands were burned so bad even holding a pen resulted in excruciating pain. The man who caused the accident proved to be Jiko Akamatsu, son of a Triad crime boss Aida Akamatsu. All charges were dropped after the right people were bribed and he never had to justify himself. In Hana’s dream world, she’s Blossom, a female vigilante, born from her wild imagination. While her dream world does not know fire, Blossom is consumed by it to bring justice to the oppressed. Armed with a pole arm, she roams the streets to fight crimes and set things right. Wherever she strikes, a blossom grows to show the world justice will be served.
