This is huge! You'll have access to all of my locked posts on Patreon, of course, and I'll also send you a personalized music or book (or both!) recommendation; just shoot me an email with your social media handle and/or some hints about what you're into, and I'll work my magic.
I started this Patreon because, to be honest with you, freelancing is hard, even when you're living outside of NYC—and it gets a lot harder when you're constantly weathering attacks from right-wing propagandists, FOX News dogwhistlers, and literal goddamn Nazis. Dissent is on its way to being criminalized, and leftist journalists like yours truly are perpetually targeted by right-wing chuds and violent neo-Nazis alike. It's not great!!
As many of us know already, there's very little security or stability to be had in this industry, and I'm tired of seeing my work defanged or softened during the editing process at other publications. Now is not the time for civility or decorum; now is the time to act, and to call out evil by its many names. There are many stories that I haven't been able to dig into because I don't have the time or the resources to pursue them, which is where this Patreon comes in: to function as both a virtual tip jar for those who appreciate my work and want to help me keep doing it, and as a way to help fund bigger, more ambitious projects. I often get a little more personal on here, too, and share links to my other published work so you can see what else I've been up to.
This page is also the home base for OVERWORKED AND UNDER PLAGUE, an ongoing series of as-told-to stories from workers who are still on the job or lost their livelihoods during the coronavirus pandemic. After I put out a call for workers impacted by this crisis to contact me, my inbox exploded with hundreds of stories—and I'm doing my best to share as many as I can, because they deserve to have their voices heard. This project has evolved alongside the pandemic, and I've got a backlog of stories I'm going to keep posting to serve as snapshots of the time before, during, and (hopefully) after COVID-19.
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the support I've already been given by my various communities—the metal, labor, anarchism, antifascism, and journalism worlds—and am always trying to be a better person, organizer, and writer. Any extra you can give to this page is a massive help, and I promise to do my absolute best not to let you down.
In a time of great darkness, we can be the spark, and together, light the flame that illuminates a more beautiful and just world.
