This is huge! You'll have access to all of my locked posts on Patreon, of course, and I'll also send you a personalized music or book (or both!) recommendation;  just shoot me an email with your social media handle and/or some hints about what you're into, and I'll work my magic.

About Kim Kelly

Hi, my name is Kim Kelly, and I'm a journalist, organizer, anarchist, and all-around troublemaker from the South Jersey Pine Barrens. I've been a writer for as long as I can remember, and got my first newspaper byline when I was 15. Since then, my work on music (specifically heavy metal), labor, culture, and politics has appeared in a wide array of publications, from Metal Maniacs, Terrorizer, and Decibel to the Washington Post, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, the New Republic, and the New York Times. I was the heavy metal editor at Noisey, VICE's former music vertical, for five years, and am currently the labor columnist at Teen Vogue and a columnist on working class issues at the Baffler. On the video side, I'm a correspondent for Means Morning News and The Real News Network, and a contributor to More Perfect Union (where you might have seen my Alabama-based reporting on the Amazon union drive in Bessemer and Warrior Met Coal strike in Brookwood).

I started this Patreon because, to be honest with you, freelancing is hard, even when you're living outside of NYC—and it gets a lot harder when you're constantly weathering attacks from right-wing propagandists, FOX News dogwhistlers, and literal goddamn Nazis. As many of us know already, there's very little security or stability to be had in this industry, and I'm also tired of seeing my work defanged or softened during the editing process at other publications. Now is not the time for civility or decorum; now is the time to act, and to call out evil by its many names.

There are many stories that I haven't been able to dig into because I don't have the time or the resources to pursue them, which is where this Patreon comes in: to function as both a virtual tip jar for those who appreciate my work and want to help me keep doing it, and as a way to help fund bigger, more ambitious projects. I often get a little more personal on here, too, and share links to my other published work so you can see what else I've been up to. Right now, I'm writing a book called 'FIGHT LIKE HELL: An Unladylike History of Labor in the U.S.' for One Signal, so expect to see a lot more about that in the coming months!
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the support I've already been given by my various communities—the metal, labor, anarchism, antifascism, and journalism worlds—and am always trying to be a better person, organizer, and writer. Any extra you can give to this page is a massive help, and I promise to do my absolute best not to let you down.

In a time of great darkness, we can be the spark, and together, light the flame that illuminates a more beautiful and just world.

100% complete
This isn't something I expect will actually happen anytime soon, but if I do eventually hit this goal, it will cover all of my rent and bills for the month, which would then free me up to focus on the assignments and stories I care most about (and give me a little bit of breathing room!).
