Hi, my name is Kim Kelly, and I'm a journalist, labor organizer, anarchist, and all-around troublemaker from the South Jersey Pine Barrens. I've been a writer for as long as I can remember, and got my first newspaper byline when I was 15. Since then, my work on music (specifically heavy metal), culture, and politics has appeared in a wide array of publications, from Metal Maniacs, Terrorizer, and Decibel to the Washington Post, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NPR, the New Republic, and the New York Times. I was the heavy metal editor at Noisey, VICE's former music vertical, for four years, and am currently the labor columnist at Teen Vogue. (I'm working on a book proposal, too, but that's another story).

I started this Patreon because, to be totally honest with you, freelancing is hard, even when you're living outside of NYC—and it gets a lot harder when you're constantly weathering attacks from right-wing propagandists, FOX News dogwhistlers, and literal goddamn Nazis. It never ceases to amaze me that we are living in a timeline in which opposing fascism is seen as anything other than an absolute baseline for humanity, and yet, here we are. Dissent is on its way to being criminalized, and leftist journalists like yours truly are perpetually targeted by right-wing chuds and violent neo-Nazis alike. It's not great!!

As many of us know already, there's very little security or stability to be had in this industry, and I'm tired of seeing my work defanged or softened during the editing process at other publications. I am a radical through and through, and want to have a place to share what I really goddamn think without having to worry about what might make a more risk-averse editor (or potential advertisers) balk. Now is not the time for civility or decorum; now is the time to act, and to call out evil by its many names.

There are also so many stories that I haven't been able to dig into because I don't have the time or the resources to pursue them, which is where I'm hoping that this Patreon will come in: to function as both a virtual tip jar for those who appreciate my work and want to help me keep doing it, and as a way to help fund bigger, more ambitious projects—whether that's going North to cover Iceland's black metal scene, heading South to talk to local anarchists about the challenges they face in 2019, or traveling to cover a strike action out West.

I'm planning to get a little more personal on here, too, and to share some stories and essays that give you a better idea of who I am and why I write about the things I do. I'm going to post regular music recommendations—because I'm always, always looking for new bands to share—as well as book reviews, gig write-ups, Q&As with interesting people who are doing important work, and links to my other published work so you can see what else I've been up to.

It'll be a bit of a grab bag, honestly, and I think that makes sense given the wide range of topics I like to cover in my work; why wouldn't I have a page that mixes skincare tips with black metal Bandcamp links, labor news, anarchist dreams, tea pairings, and meditations on class and culture?

In summation, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the support I've already been given by my various communities—the metal, labor, anarchism, antifascism, and journalism worlds—and am always trying to be a better person, organizer, and writer. Any extra you can give to this page is a massive help, and I promise to do my absolute best not to let you down.

In a time of great darkness, we can be the spark, and together, light the flame that illuminates a more beautiful and just world.

I'm blown away by this level of support. At this level, you'll have access to all of my locked posts on Patreon, I'll send you a personalized music and book  recommendation, and I'll also answer any question you have about music, journalism, skincare, tea, or politics (within reason - don't be weird) in a public blog post on here so everyone can benefit from your clever line of questioning.

Goals
75% complete
This isn't something I expect will actually happen anytime soon, but if I do eventually hit this goal, it will cover all of my rent and bills for the month, which would then free me up to focus on the assignments and stories I care most about (and give me a little bit of breathing room!).
