Homeless for a day.

David's Story

In 2007 I hit an all time low point in my life. I was forced to leave my home in an unwanted divorce. In an instant, I lost my 2 beautiful children, my wife, my home and all of my belongings. I left with a small black bag with some clothes in it. In my utter devastation I lost my long time career as an interior designer and I literally had nowhere to go.

I managed to talk some friends into letting me sleep in their basement and that couch became my home for the next 6 months. I went through several low paying jobs trying to get back on my feet but found myself crying every ten minutes and things were not working out. My friends decided I had overstayed my welcome and asked me to find another place to stay.

Someone I had worked with offered to let me stay in his unfinished basement for a time. I left the house where I had been staying and headed for my next temporary home. I called my friend to let him know I was on my way and he informed me that the arrangement was not going to work out. At that moment, I felt like the world had chewed me up and spit me out.

I was a great husband and a great father to my kids. I went to church every Sunday and I lived my life on the straight and narrow path. How could this happen to a good person?

I became homeless for a day.

The wave of disappointment and utter devastation of my situation hit me like a ton of bricks. It looked like I would be living in my car for a while. After some time had past I called another friend who happened to be looking for someone to rent a small, spare bedroom. I took the offer right away and headed there to unpack my bag of clothes in my new 10 foot by 10 foot empty bedroom.

I purchased a blow up mattress and I embraced my new space. I thanked my friend and let them know that I would only need to stay for a month or two. A year and half later I was still there.

I went through a lot of emotional healing during that time period and It was time to stretch my wings and see if I could fly on my own once again. I landed a good paying job and got myself a large loft apartment with 3 bedrooms. I GOT MY KIDS BACK! Things were really starting to look up for me now. I bought some thrift store furniture and a couple of beds for my kids and I was all set up!

My job paid well but was not fulfilling the desires of my heart. One New Year's Eve I decided to stay home and reevaluate my life up to this point. My kids were at their moms for the night so I just sat on my couch reflecting. I was still struggling to find my new purpose in life. I decided to pray as the midnight hour was approaching.  I prayed to God and asked Him what He wanted me to do with my life. I really wanted to know what I was supposed to be doing.

I grabbed a notebook and began to write. A rush of things began to appear in my writings which seemed to go on for hours. When I was finished writing, I reviewed all the pages of notes and asked God to boil it all down into one sentence. This sentence would become my purpose in life and this is the sentence that was written down on the page.

"Love The World Through Your Art"

This would become my new mission in life, Loving the world through my art.

Soon after that I started a company called Sips n Splatters Art Parties. A few months after that I met my soulmate Chris and we became Mr and Mrs Brandt. We have been creating DIY art together for for the past 8 years. Our DIY painting studios have reached over 100,000 people in our local community and now we want to bring our unique brand of do it yourself arts and crafts to the world.

As we begin the next leg of our mission to Love The World Through Art we want to thank all of you for taking the time to read our story and become a Patron to our mission. We know you will feel loved while watching our videos and having fun making DIY Crafts with us. Please join our mission!

Much thanks and love,
