About

My name is K. M. "Kat" Allen and I'm children's book author and illustrator from rural Grafton, North Dakota. I regularly visit schools, libraries, and bookstores to do free readings and kids activities relating to the outdoors and storytelling. All of my events include free children's crafts and the general public is invited to attend. My goal is to travel to more schools to encourage children to enjoy activities in natural settings and to spark their imaginations.

Originally from northern Minnesota, I grew up on a farm with a love for art, writing, and the outdoors. My first book, Where I Fly: A Hockey Story was recently published by Curious Cat Books, an independent publishing company located in Ely, Minnesota. I recommend this book to children ages 4–12, but all ages are sure to enjoy. The story is about a special bond between parent and child–which is strengthened by their shared love of the outdoors and the game of hockey.

Where I Fly: A Hockey Story is the first book in my "Play Wild" children's series, which is designed to create excitement about playing outdoors and exploring outside. Each book includes several pages of non-fiction information about the activities, natural setting, and animals featured in the story. My hope is that these books will inspire young readers to explore their own backyards and spend more time playing outdoors.

Planned to release in March 2019, the second book in my series, Where We Run: A Dog Sledding Story is also set in northern Minnesota, and follows a parent and child as they explore the wilderness with their team of sled dogs. The third book in the series, Where We Glide: A Canoeing Adventure (title pending) is the project on which I am currently working and is set in Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. More titles may be planned in the future for the "Play Wild" series, for a variety of outdoor activities across the world.

After graduating from Stephen-Argyle Central High School in 2003, I received a B.F.A. from Savannah College of Art & Design and also studied fine art in Florence, Italy. A career in marketing and design led me to Chicago, and later Milwaukee, before my husband and I moved to a rural area to raise our family. Here on our farm, I continue to work from home as an artist, author, and illustrator.

Thank you for your interest in me and my stories! - K. M. Allen
