About

Hey Y'all! / ¡Hola A Todos! / Hei Alle Sammen!
My name is Kieran Myles-Andrés Tverbakk, I'm from Houston TX, and I am currently based in the Twin Cities MN. I'm a sculpture and installation artist with a background in music, writing, photography, and painting. I began playing the guitar at eight years old, started writing and performing music with my sister throughout middle school and high school, delved into darkroom photography for four years, then painted towards my BFA.

Since then I've had ongoing work in non-profit programming, advocating for accessible and affordable healthcare and wellness services for LGBTQ+ folx. I am also a studio assistant, I am involved in ongoing community art projects and pick up side gigs when possible. With a flexible schedule, I can focus more time and energy on my creative practice, which is also a full-time job. And so this Patreon has been born of my desire to Do This Thing but also because there is a lack of trans* representation in the arts. When our selves are not being represented, our stories are not being heard.

Having a creative practice has always been cathartic for me. I was not aware of it as a child but my anxiety, self-consciousness, and anger had stemmed from dysphoria. I channeled this into every artistic medium I had access to because I simply didn't have the language to describe what it felt like. But I remember being uncomfortable, constantly shifting in my seat or in the small area in which my feet took up space. I remember speaking but not understanding why my voice sounded like that. I remember being embraced by friends or family and it was as though their hands were not welcome by my skin.

I am compelled to produce art objects and sculptures, physical presences that embody my personal history and contentions with gender identity. I am actively exploring notions of loss through transitioning, the duality of visibility, and the reclamation of language, symbols, and practices that have historically been in opposition to queerness. It’s important to share this work because art is meant to reflect the world we live in. I never had a fundamental understanding of gender identity while I was growing up (thank you Texas public schools). However, my body knew before my brain did. I was irritable, closed off, and tense. When I discovered music and art, I felt like there was someone or something out there that understood what I was going through. This empathy came in abstract forms and was filtered through various lenses, genres, and media but at the core was something that gave me enough strength to keep going.
It is my hope that my artwork can do the same and will invite dialogue surrounding urgent issues facing the LGBTQ+ community. The more that we openly talk about our lives as gender non-conforming, non-binary, and/or trans* individuals, the more fruitful and undeniable our existence becomes.

Thank you for taking the time to read all of this! And thank you to everyone who becomes a Patron; any and all levels of support are appreciated. The money earned from this page will exclusively be used towards paying monthly rent for my studio space, application fees for exhibitions/residencies/grants, materials, and paying myself a small stipend for labor costs.
