Hey folx,

I'm Nate Kiernan (aka MrNinjaSquirrel), and wow, you've found my Patreon page! If you're here you're probably wondering why I've just now jumped onto the crowdfunding ship (or you're here by mistake, in which case stick around for a minute and let me see if I can convince you this is worth your time).

I have been running Kritiqal for the last few years as a pet project, and while the experience has been fantastic (aside from all the times I caused the site to implode), I continue to find myself frustrated that I cannot devote as much time as I would like to growing the site into more than just "my corner of the internet." And so, I am turning to you, wonderful friends of the internet, to help me make Kritiqal a thriving bedrock of pop-culture criticism and, on certain occasion, home to a joke or two.

Wait, what's Kritiqal anyway?
In case you are new, Kritiqal is a project I first created as a platform for my various video games writing. Originally, this was mostly in the form of reviews (like this piece on Titanfall 2's diminishing power fantasy returns), but lately I've been branching out into other forms of writing as well as expanding the depth and scope of my reviews.

I've written about how Overcook represents the best and worst of the restaurant industry, the historical and political significance of Tahira: Echoes of the Astral Empire, and how Dance Central helped me leave my comfort zone. I think video games are one of, if not the most interesting art form of the modern era, and have yet to run out of things to say about them. Take a look around at my past work, and if you like what I'm doing, consider pledging a dollar or two so I can continue throwing myself into so many Word documents as I neglect building a social life and getting out in the sun.

What are you specifically hoping to accomplish with Patreon?
My move to crowdfunding was primarily for the sake of being able to afford to a) keep self-hosting Kritiqal (web-hosting isn't terribly expensive, but it isn't free), and b) put more time and energy into my writing. As of now I am keeping my goals reasonable by aiming for one long (1k+ word) article/review a month, as well as potentially one or two smaller (<500 words) pieces here and there.

As my funding grows so will these goals, and if I can gain enough of a following I would especially like to use some of the money I make off Patreon to commission other talented writers to share their voices on Kritiqal (I'm sure you'd appreciate getting to read someone other than me, too).

I am incredibly excited about what the future holds for Kritiqal, and think I've never been in a better place with my writing and the things I'm writing about. I hope you'll join me as I move into a bold new period in my writing career. Things are only going to get better from here!

WHOA! Thanks so much for chipping in! $1 might not seem like a lot, but every little bit helps. Help me choose what to write about with patron only monthly polls, and please accept my most sincere appreciation along with that warm fuzzy feeling that you're helping make a dream a reality!

Hey there, you just helped buy me some coffee for the month! Aside from you wonderful patrons, coffee is the miracle drug that makes this all possible!

As a thanks for helping feed my addiction, you'll get a monthly collection of all the random notes I take while playing/watching/listening/reading/eating, as well as any other random tidbits I happen to come up with during the writing process. Thanks for helping move my office out of the dorm and into the nearest Starbucks!

Oh goodness, you're single handedly keeping the site running by helping me afford to keep hosting it. This is a HUGE deal and I cannot thank you enough for your contribution.

I'm going to have to come up with a more substantial reward in the future, but for now you will be added to the list of top-tier patrons in the footer of the site and wherever else seems appropriate.

Thanks again for buying me dinner and keeping the lights on. You're amazing!

Whoo, I can pay my webhosting fees! It's a small step, but having my writing up where you can see it is kind of important so let's celebrate by keeping the lights on!
