My name is Kurtis Brand and I'm an expat artist living and working in Guatemela, creating objects that document and express my experiences in this crazy magical country.
My family first arrived at Lake Atitlan, Guatemala for a well needed 4 month break from New York City. But quickly the people and the landscape took hold of me and I was creating new work like a madman using anything I could find, mostly quotidian materials and objects sourced locally, to make my art. Soon I began to embrace the natural materials used by indigenous Mayan people to make their crafts. The natural twine, plant dyes, and other sustainable materials I have found here are my favorite medium.
My work is always evolving with every new experience I have here. For example recently, I have used ash from the tragic and horrific volcano eruption that left so many dead and so many families homeless. Creating poetic abstract paintings only from the ash, I was able to sell some of these pieces to benefit the survivors and help them relocate into new homes provided by Habitat for Humanity.
The sustainable model is my favorite way of creating and selling work. It is a win win for me, for the gallery I am currently showing in, and especially for the people who receive a significant portion of the proceeds.
I hope you enjoy my work and become a patron to help support myself as an artist, to help support the arts, and especially to help support the many people in need in Guatemala. '
Right now, 20% of any support I receive will go to help the many families and survivors of the recent volcano eruption tragedy. I hope you will join me in my journey. Every piece I create tells a story of my Guatemalan experience.
     Thanks for your time!

Goals
$0 of $1,500 per month
$1500/ month would allow me to almost entirely fund my  current art making activities and also allow me to donate 30% to local charities in Guatemala. This money would go to studio expenses, an assistant, materials, travel, and marketing costs. Currently 30% of these funds would go to Habitat for Humanity to help provide homes for survivors of the tragic volcanic eruptions in Guatemala.
