About Kathryn

THANK YOU so much for supporting my work. I write at the intersection of psychology and craft, exploring how we can use art/craft/creativity to heal individuals and communities.

Why Support Me: Writing as a 21st Century Career

I have been a writer for well over a decade. As of 2021, I am working on my tenth book. While not all of them are amazing, they each show a commitment to my audience and my growth as a writer. I have managed to support myself in the expensive city of San Francisco for all of this time. However, the truth is that writers don't make a lot of money from our writing.

I make my income through a combination of book sales, ad income from online blog writing, and direct payment from blogs and magazines for my writing (which themselves all rely on ad income.) I get a tiny percentage of each of these sales, despite putting in 100% of the writing work and most of the marketing work. This is the nature of the writing business in the 21st century - it's almost entirely tied to advertising money. I'd love to see us get away from this and support art and writing directly so that more creative people can make a true living from the art itself.

Yes, we can make side income by selling online courses, doing marketing writing, etc. But if people are willing to support writers just for doing their writing careers, it results in better work for everyone. Direct Patreon support and crowdsourced funding is so powerful in this way. By giving a little bit each month, you allow a writer to make a sustainable living, which means that she (in this case, I) can focus on making their best work. I support other writers and artists in this way and am grateful to anyone who supports my career.

I hope that you'll see that when we donate to independent writers and artists, we are improving the world. People who put their heart into their work are better for this world than people who are doing things rotely. People who create are bringing new life into our communities. Patreon is a way to give to those people, to say that you support independent art, that you want to see indie writers thrive, that you believe in the creative process even more than the products it results in.

A Little About Me

I am a writer with a Masters in Counseling-Based Integral (East and West) Psychology who loves to crochet and work with hand-based crafts. I write primarily at the intersection of psychology and crafting and am best-known for my books and other writings about the mental and physical health benefits of crochet. I have recently expanded my research and writing to include other crafts as well as art history (look for a new book coming out from Schiffer Publishing in the next year or so.) I provide tips and other resources but mostly I share stories because I believe that what is personal to one can be universally applicable to others and I also believe that sharing our stories connects us in vital ways.

My Mission

I commit to using my skills / experience in writing, crafting and therapeutic creativity to assist others in understanding, exploring and achieving their creative dreams, honoring their artistic selves and healing their inner and outer worlds. I am continuing to delve deep into research and writing.

What You Get As a Patreon Supporter

I have had a Patreon account for years now and I keep changing what I offer. I couldn't quite figure it out until recently when I realized that truly what I have to offer isn't necessarily tangible. Yes, I can send out books and thank you notes, but if you believe in Patreon and in what I'm doing then the real reason that you contribute is because you want to be able to support independent writing.

That's why I've completely overhauled my Patreon account in 2021 to make it a "donate what you can because you believe in furthering a writer's career" format.

Of course, you'll get some things periodically: updates on my work, discounts to purchase my tangible products like books, first looks at not-yet-published works-in-progress and occasional snail mail.

Why Give Me Your Monthly Support

  • You're supporting a true indie author / writer. I am committed to high-quality self-publishing online and in print. The more time I devote to it, the better it's getting. It's not easy to make it in the world of freelance and every dollar helps.
  • You're helping a survivor of chronic mental health issues. I have struggled with depression for most of my life, and I have worked hard to find a way to remain a creative, productive individual who contributes to my society. Creative, community-building writing is how I do that.
  • You're supporting the wider craft community by allowing me to continue sharing and supporting their work across social media and in my writing.
  • I'm no fly-by-night writer. Sometimes you don't know if you should fund someone independent because you don't know if they'll really keep creating. I've been self-employed as a writer for the better part of two decades, and my body of work continues growing and developing.
  • You'll play an important role in taking my writing work to the next level. Less time focused on raising funds means more time devoted to the true art of writing and connecting community together.
  • You'll be helping me to help others. I believe in using my voice and platform to help encourage others to use creativity for healing individuals and communities. Plus when I get enough funding, I donate a percentage of my proceeds to support other like-minded artists.

How The Money Helps

The funding allows:

  • Creative and emotional space to be able to take the work to the next level. I continually work to take my writing to the next level. My work has included books that I hope have helped others (Crochet Saved My Life and Hook to Heal), the Mandalas for Marinke depression awareness project (now a book!), and a new title coming out soon from Schiffer: Art's Mind: The Creatives Lives and Mental Health of Famous Artists. Doing this kind of intensive creative work requires some time to just create. Chasing money to pay the bills each month inhibits this work. Funding directly supports its creation.
  • Time to delve deeper into research to bring you fresh, new, interesting interviews and information about the health benefits of crafting and how to access those benefits.
  • Creation of new content that I'll share first through Patreon-only blog posts.
  • Continued self-care and mental health care; this allows me to create and also to give my best self to others to support them in their craft work.
  • Note that you can see in my "goals" what the money goes in terms of my specific spending. At each goal level, I also offer donations of my books to charity (generally to mental health organizations) and I also offer donations to other similar artists/writers.

Artistic Tithing

One of the things that I've written about in my book Hook to Heal is the concept of "artistic tithing" which I got from someone else and it resonated with me immediately. It's the idea that you commit a certain amount of your money to support the art and artists that you love. You might use it to buy indie dyed yarn. You might use it to order handcrafted items from crafters who work in a different medium than you. You might spend it all on gifts at a local craft fair. Or you might choose to spend it supporting work like mine! Please know that I'll work hard to pay it forward with heartfelt, community-supportive work. Any bit you can offer is so thoroughly appreciated.
Goals
$73.93 of $100 per month
When we collectively reach this goal, I will donate one of my books per month to a local little free library.
