Know Your City (KYC) was founded in 2009 by a group of big hearted activists who used art and community events to tell the stories of Portland and bring people together. KYC was originally founded as "the Dill Pickle Club," which paid homage to Chicago's popular 1920's speakeasy and activist hub that worked under the same name.

KYC is continuing the creative placemaking work we started 9 years ago with the same quirky, scrappy, grassroots attitude, now under the leadership of LGBTQ and BIPOC (black and indigenous people of color) artists, activists, and historians in Portland, Oregon.

We're honored to be doing this important community work with leadership from impacted and oppressed communities.
In the last few years, we've gone to several schools with majority students of color, and reached over 1000 youth through our Youth Print PDX program. We've continued to provide unique tours about oppression, resistance, gentrification, queer activism, art, social change, and history for 9 years though our Walking and Bus Tours program. We've created over 20 heartfelt publications that tell readers of all ages how Portland came to be through accessible mediums such as multilingual comics, zines, newspapers, and magazines. We're proud of the work we've done so far, but really, we're just getting started.

In 2019, we'll be:
  • Producing 40 new publications including children's books starring characters of color, history comics about Oregon's queer and POC history, Youth Voices: a series about issues that impact high school and college students, and zines with stories from our neighborhoods.
  • Launching Youth and the Law, a graphic novel and training series by and for youth that teaches young people about their rights, and how to interact safely with law enforcement, all while centering the real life experience of targeted students and young people.
  • Expanding our volunteer program to make more room for our community to get involved with the hands on, day-to-day work that makes our programs possible.
  • Developing more accessible tour programming for folks with disabilities and for whom English is not their first language.

We know that we can continue making an impact and amplifying underrepresented voices, but we can't do it without you
